Principal Scientist, Translational Immunology
BiogenAbout the role
About This Role
Biogen is seeking an experienced Principal Scientist to help drive our biomarker and translational immunology strategies across several therapeutic programs in multiple indications. Translational Immunology at Biogen’s West Coast Hub investigates the molecular pathways of disease to build upon our understanding of the mechanism of action of our therapeutics. The role is highly collaborative and will focus on technology development in single cell biology to inform both preclinical and clinical stage therapeutic programs. The successful candidate will be highly motivated, be able to think strategically and creatively, and be able to work independently to investigate novel biology of our therapeutics and their effect on immune cells in the context of severe immune-mediated diseases. This position will report to the Translational Immunology Lead at the Biogen West Coast Hub located in South San Francisco, CA.
What You’ll Do
- Lead translational research projects to inform the mechanism of action of our therapeutics and address key evidence gaps
- Evaluate and build upon state-of-the art single cell technology platforms and lead implementation in translational research projects and clinical studies
- Independently design experiments, perform laboratory benchwork, analyze and interpret data, and clearly communicate complex results to cross-functional teams within the organization and externally
- Develop clinically relevant in vitro, ex vivo, and in vivo model systems to interrogate the effect of our therapeutics
- Contribute to the development of biomarker strategies focused on generation of clinical evidence of immune target/pathway engagement and modulation of disease biomarkers
- Serve as the subject matter expert on the application of molecular and immunological techniques and model systems to drug development programs and contribute to asset clinical development and biomarker plans
- Work with cross-functional teams including discovery research, biomarker, clinical, biostatistics, and bioinformatic scientists
- Contribute to the preparation of study reports and summaries required for primary research publications, patent filings, and/or regulatory documents
- Participate in conferences and academic partnerships in the primary research area
Who You Are
You are a creative and inquisitive scientist with strong scientific training in immunology and single cell biology who can lead and drive innovative projects aimed at uncovering novel biology of therapeutics.
Required Skills
- PhD in Immunology or related field with minimum 5+ years of relevant industry experience. BS/MS with 9+ years of relevant industry experience may be considered.
- Expertise in single cell biology including scRNA-seq, sc immune profiling of BCR/TCR repertoire, CITE-seq, combinatorial indexing, and spatial transcriptomics
- Knowledge and proficiency in single cell data analysis and visualization using R or Python
- Expertise in in vitro/ex vivo cell-based techniques including isolation of primary human immune cell subsets, mammalian cell culture, cell-based functional assays and multiparameter flow cytometry (10+ colors)
- Proficiency in flow cytometry software (FACSDiva, SpectroFlo, FlowJo, etc), GraphPad Prism, and Microsoft Office programs
- Strong scientific publication record in the field of immunology or related field
- Excellent oral, presentation, and written communication skills
- Ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects simultaneously
- Proven ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment
Preferred Skills
- Strong track record of industry experience in applying immunological techniques to drug development
