Fine Arts Instructor (Temporary/Part-Time) (Mulitple positions)

The Department of Park & Recreation (DPR) Community Arts Unit is seeking Fine Art Instructors for temporary year-round employment to instruct and support classes. These Instructors will work with a variety of media/disciplines for all ages and abilities to include offerings in ceramics, fine art, jewelry/metalsmithing, sewing, crafts, painting, and drawing.

Specific duties include:

• Teaching one or more classes in any of the following: Jewelry (metalsmithing), Sewing, Painting, Drawing, and Ceramics with skills in wheel throwing, hand building, surface decoration and glaze application fundamentals;
• Developing curriculums and lesson plans;
• Tracking enrollment and attendance;
• Emailing students reminders of class status, emergency closures or cancellations, etc;
• Collecting program evaluations submitted by participants;
• Communicating with class manager regarding supplies, class scheduling and miscellaneous events; and
• Performing general administrative responsibilities such as completing required trainings and submitting timesheets.

The successful candidate will possess the following:

• Good interpersonal skills to interact daily with the public, including a high degree of collaboration with other staff;
• Strong organizational and time-management skills to work independently and within a team environment;
• Ability to adapt teaching methods to accommodate different learning styles and abilities;
• Effective communication skills; and
• Computer skills using MS Word and Excel.

Minimum 

• Completion of the requirements for graduation from a standard senior high school or vocational school, a GED certificate, or the equivalent; and
• 1200 hours of ceramic, jewelry or fine art experience, including any work, volunteer, or formal art participation; and
• 500 hours as an instructor in ceramic, jewelry or fine art experience.

Substitution: Additional education in a related field may be substituted for the experience requirement, with each year of post-high school education substituting for 400 hours of technical experience. However, additional education may not be substituted for the instructing hours requirement.

Desirables: Preference may be given to candidates with experience in one or more of the following:

• Teaching art, including jewelry, sewing, ceramics, painting and drawing;
• Working with individuals with disabilities;
• Teaching youth/teens pottery or jewelry making; and/or
• Ample experience in one or more of the following disciplines with related skills:
  • Jewelry: Have experience and depth of knowledge of various jewelry studio tools and equipment; able to teach fundamental techniques and safety to individuals of varying skill levels from beginner to intermediate level and teens. Proficient skills include: soldering, metal forming, stone setting, enameling, investing and casting. Must be comfortable with using smith torches, a flexshaft, and traditional hand tools.
  • Ceramics:  Have experience and depth of knowledge and skills in wheel throwing, hand building, surface decoration and glazing fundamentals. Technical skills in kiln loading; glaze mixing; pottery studio maintenance.

Special Requirements

If selected, all staff will be required to:

• Submit to a pre-employment criminal records check. It may include checks of the following: criminal record, driving record, education, professional licensure, and credit history. You may be required to sign a release authorizing the County to obtain your background information. 
• Attend all required training, wear a uniform if applicable, and have the ability to lift up to 25 lbs.
• Stand and walk for a prolonged period during the work shift; and 
• Have a bank account to accept direct payroll deposits.

Additional Information

Work Hours: May vary between 0-30 hours per week and includes weekends. Classes are held typically in the evenings from 5:00 pm - 9:30 pm, and weekends between 10:00 am – 5:00 pm.
