About the role

General summary/purpose

This position serves as a highly specialized member of the HR-Compensation team, functioning as a strategic partner to the Vice President of HR, Executive Director of Total Rewards, Director of Compensation and university leadership on all matters related to executive compensation. The Advisor is dedicated to facilitating data-driven decisions and providing highly analytical insights for specialized compensation matters related to executive leadership. The position collaborates extensively with JHU leaders, external consultants and internal subject matter experts, contributing to critical analyses, dynamic presentations and impactful Board deliverables that support the executive compensation function. This position will also play an instrumental role in executing large-scale internal equity analyses and external market reviews, with a focus on identifying challenges and proposing transformative actions to address impactful change.


Specific duties & responsibilities

Strategic Collaboration

  • Collaborate with HR leadership on executive compensation activities, including job and market evaluations, market review to support executive searches, formulating salary offer recommendations, draft offer letter preparation, and annual compensation processes.
  • Work with internal HR leaders and external consultants to prepare materials and highly specialized analyses for the meetings of the Compensation Committee of the Board of Trustees. This includes structured annual compensation planning, along with ad hoc requests related to new hires or promotions.
  • Advise executive leadership on new hire salary offers and compensation structure determinations related to university leadership positions. This will involve market research, along with related analyses.
  • Serve as the key project manager to ensure that critical deadlines are met during the annual JHU executive compensation process.
  • Collaborate with designated members of the Johns Hopkins Health System Compensation team on matters of executive compensation related to Johns Hopkins Medicine (JHM) officers and leadership. Manage ad-hoc requests, along with providing key deliverables related to the annual JHM incentive planning process.
  • Coordinate enterprise-wide compensation program approvals, deviations and changes related to executive compensation matters
  • Serve as internal subject matter expert and advisor for executive leadership inquiries related to executive compensation questions or concerns, at the request and direction of HR leaders.
  • Develop effective working relationships with various internal and external resources (including consultants, legal, central finance, payroll, tax, benefits, etc.) to ensure that all actions, plans and programs pertaining to executive compensation comply with internal corporate governance guidelines and external regulatory requirements.


Analytical Expertise

  • Research and analyze executive compensation structures, external market data, internal equity and consultant benchmarking analyses to develop materials that support leadership’s ability to make informed compensation decisions.
  • Provide analytical support for the annual incentive compensation process for JHU executive leadership.
  • Perform non-routine, complex analyses to organize, calibrate and review large amounts of data and make recommendations on follow-up actions.


Documentation and Compliance

  • Ensure accurate documentation and recordkeeping of executive compensation activities within the Payroll/HRIS.
  • Work with Compensation leaders to develop and document process workflows and guidelines related to the executive compensation function.
  • Interface with JHU Tax and Benefits Compliance departments to ensure accurate recordkeeping and reporting on the IRS Form 990 report, in relation to all relevant executive compensation matters
  • Assist with development of job descriptions for new leadership positions and advise on job description changes related to position restructuring or revised job scope.
  • Manage recordkeeping and documentation processes related to disqualified persons, including regular collaboration with the Office of General Counsel to fulfill compliance requirements.
  • Support Board governance requirements related to executive compensation matters. Collaborate with the VP of HR to ensure that all documentation related to Compensation Committee meetings is accurately maintained.
