Overview:
The Bioresource Science and Engineering Group within the Environmental Sciences Division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking a driven researcher to contribute to cutting-edge studies on the economic and spatial optimization of biomass resources. The Environmental Sciences Division (ESD) is an interdisciplinary research and development organization with more than 60 years of achievements in local, national, and international environmental research. Our vision is to expand scientific knowledge and develop innovative strategies and technologies that will boost economic prosperity, ensure energy security, and strengthen the nation's competitiveness while sustaining Earth’s natural resources. Our scientists conduct research, develop technology, and perform analyses to understand and assess responses of environmental systems at the environment-human interface and the consequences of alternative energy and environmental strategies.
Major Duties/Responsibilities:
- Program and optimize economic land-use optimization models for forestry and agricultural systems.
- Data analysis, interpretation, visualization, and report preparation.
- Support research in agroecosystem modeling and sustainable land use for biomass production
- Leverage ORNL’s staff and capabilities in high-performance computing, environmental science, and biological sciences to advance design of sustainable, competitive biobased industries
- Develop internal and external collaborations to help sustain a robust research program to better quantify opportunities and challenges facing the design and deployment of sustainable biomass supply systems

Basic Qualifications:
- Ph.D. degree in environmental or biological engineering or related discipline
- R&D background in forestry and agriculture production and logistical modeling
- Demonstrated proficiency in the use of Python, industry standard modeling and simulation tools (e.g. ExtendSim, AnyLogic, STELLA, JavaScript)
- Willingness to participate creatively in a variety of collaborative, dynamic team environments
- Motivated and safety conscious
- Ability to set priorities, multi-task and adapt to ever changing needs
- A strong record of productive and creative research demonstrated by publications in peer-reviewed journals or by reports and patents from industrially focused research
- Excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to communicate in English to an international scientific audience
Preferred Qualifications:
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.
- Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.
