I. Major Responsibilities:
1. Under the supervision of the primary surgeon and according to hospital and departmental policies and procedures, assists the surgeon during surgical procedures for the following:
2. Provides primary assistance to the surgeon during the surgical procedure. The role of a Surgical Technician First Assist requires active participation during the procedure, providing exposure, hemostasis, tying or sewing, tissue handling plus other functions as assigned or determined by the primary surgeon responsible for the patient or procedure; other duties as assigned or directed by within the scope of Surgical First Assist practice.

4. Inserts and remove Foley bladder urinary catheter
5. Provides retraction of tissue and organs for optimal visualization with regard to tissue type and appropriate retraction instrument and/or technique
6. Packing sponges in the body
7. Positioning patient to maintain circulation and access for the surgeon
8. Places pneumatic tourniquets
9. Assists in maintaining hemostasis by direct pressure, us and application of appropriate surgical instrument for the task placement of ties, placement of suture ligatures, application of chemical hemostatic agents or other measures as directed by the surgeon
10. Cauterizing wounds and vessels, placing clamps and sutures. Closing skin with adhesives, sutures or staples, etc.
11. Performing or aiding in patient suction, drainage and irrigation. Ligates and cuts tissue per surgeon’s directive.
12. Inserts drainage tubes per surgeon’s directive. Selects and applies wound dressing.
13. Maintains the integrity of the sterile field. Closes all wound layers (fascia, subcutaneous and skin) per surgeon’s directive.
14. Assists with resuscitation of patient during cardiac arrest or other life-threatening events in the operating room
15. Performs technical activities in an organized and timely manner.
16. Maintains patient confidentiality at all times.
17. Transports patients to and from the operating room.
18. The trained First Assist can also work as a Surgical Technician as needed, While functioning in that capacity:
19. Using the principles of asepsis, prepares instruments, supplies and sutures for the procedure
20. Assists in properly positioning patient. Provides appropriate instrumentation and supplies to the surgeon during procedure.
21. Cleans and restocks the operating room according to protocol. Washes and assembles instruments and supplies according to protocol.
22. Assembles and checks instrument and equipment functionality prior to procedure-follows upon repairs and replacement of instruments as requested
23. Completes review of physician preference lists ensuring communication and validation of correct supplies and instruments for the procedure
24. Evaluate the safe implementation of electrical equipment ensuring patient safety
25. Manages all procedures related to all sponge, instruments, needles and materials counts
26. Handles and processes pathology specimens, culture, drugs and other items on the sterile field
27. Keeps accurate counts of medications and irrigating solutions used during the surgical procedure.
