The Assistant Technical Director (ATD) assists the Technical Director (TD) with day-to-day management, scheduling, budgeting, and drafting of scene shop projects. This position plays an integral part in developing scenery department policies and standards for safety and construction. This position is full-time, non-exempt, with a 40-week contract salary range being $57,000 - $59,000.

Role Responsibilities:

• Work with TD, Production Managers, and Scenic designers to analyze designs, estimate costs, and confirm build plan on assigned projects. Advance and lead projects from engineering, build, and installation through strike.
• Collaborate with TD to create technical construction and installation drawings for productions as assigned. Communicates with the Lead Carpenters to determine assignments and monitor the construction of built units.
• Advise and instruct the Stage Supervisors and Running Crew on proper operation of all show elements.
• Read and review all rehearsal and performance reports; reply with answers/information in a timely manner.
• Assist in the coordination of the daily shop schedule in order to complete notes in a timely manner and insure the continued flow of project builds.
• Assist with construction, load-in, and strike as needed.
• Attend production and staff meetings as well as dry techs, technical and other rehearsals as needed.
• Work with Technical Director to develop and maintain working standards and procedures for the Scene Shop. Assisting with the instruction of safe and effective construction techniques with the Scene Shop staff.
• Assist with orientation of new staff and temporary employees including but not limited to tool and safety training.
• Assist with maintenance of tool inventory. Ensure safe operations and coordinate or handle repairs of broken tools. Advise TD on possible purchases of new tools.
• Assist in the maintenance of Scene Shop with the TD and Lead Carpenters. Assist in the maintenance of performance spaces with TD and Stage Supervisors.
• Assist in the development of summer maintenance and Capital projects for the Scene Shop and performance spaces.
• Participate in administrative projects as assigned such as: PO tracking, payroll, show estimates, work-flow scheduling, inventory, and seasonal budget tracking.
• Participate in the development and implementation of a curriculum for the TD Apprentice.
• Work with Shop Manager to order materials for use by the scenery department, as well as to ensure that inventory sign-outs are completed properly for all items used.
• Other duties as assigned.

 

Minimum Requirements:

• BA/BFA in technical theatre, or 3-5 years of experience in a professional scene shop.
• Computer literacy, including Word, Excel, Outlook and AutoCAD.
• Structural and technical design skills.
• Experience in theatrical rigging, inclusive of counterweight and winch systems.
• Effective verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to multi-task and work with tight deadlines.
• Commitment to working in a collaborative environment serving a wide variety of constituents.
• Be able to maintain a professional demeanor at all times.

 

Preferred Background:

• Experience in supporting opera, drama, dance and concert performances.
• TCP certified rigger for theatre.
• CNC programming and structural analysis experience.
• Experience with theatrical automation systems.
