About the Role:
The Medical Dosimetrist collaborates with radiation oncologists and medical physicists to develop, optimize, and evaluate radiation treatment plans using advanced planning software and manual calculations. This role requires critical thinking and problem-solving skills to balance therapeutic doses with the protection of healthy tissues, utilizing a variety of imaging modalities to delineate target structures and critical avoidance areas. The Dosimetrist ensures accurate treatment delivery while adhering to compliance programs, ethical standards, and quality assurance protocols.
Scope of Role:
In collaboration with the radiation oncologist and medical physicist, the Medical Dosimetrist applies critical thinking and problem-solving skills to design, generate, and evaluate radiation treatment plans using advanced computer software and manual calculations. These plans are developed based on the prescribed dose, target volumes, and dose constraints for surrounding structures, integrating various imaging modalities to ensure accurate delineation of target and critical structures. The dosimetrist also contributes to quality assurance processes, supports accurate treatment delivery, and adheres to professional, ethical, and compliance standards established by New York Oncology Hematology (NYOH) and the broader medical dosimetry profession.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Design and optimize radiation therapy treatment plans using advanced treatment planning software, ensuring accuracy, precision, and timely completion based on the complexity of each case and physician prescriptions.
- Utilize various imaging modalities (e.g., CT, MRI, PET) for accurate identification and delineation of target structures and critical anatomy.
- Calculate and evaluate dose distributions and dose-volume histograms for treatment plans, ensuring adherence to prescribed dose limits and constraints.
- Perform patient-specific quality assurance tasks under the guidance of a medical physicist, including secondary dose calculations.
- Collaborate with the treatment team to develop and implement the use of immobilization devices, custom shielding, bolus, and other beam-modifying devices.
- Consult with physicians and therapists to communicate treatment plan details, offer alternative planning solutions, and ensure proper implementation of treatment parameters.
- Document treatment planning processes and quality assurance activities accurately and in compliance with institutional and regulatory requirements.
- Transfer treatment plans, setup instructions, and other relevant data into the record-and-verify system, verifying accuracy post-transfer.
- Participate in adaptive radiation therapy by modifying plans as necessary based on imaging or anatomical changes during the course of treatment.
- Assist with brachytherapy procedures, including planning and dose calculations, under the direction of a medical physicist and within credentialing guidelines.
- Perform periodic quality assurance checks on treatment planning systems, imaging systems, and other radiation therapy equipment under medical physicist supervision.
- Ensure accurate coding and documentation of dosimetry procedures, including treatment planning and quality assurance, in compliance with billing guidelines and regulations.
- Perform general computer tasks, including word processing, managing spreadsheets, organizing files, and backing up data.
- Stay current with advancements in treatment planning technologies, techniques, and best practices through continuing education and professional development.
- Provide education and mentorship to medical dosimetry students, residents, and other trainees in radiation oncology.
