Basic Qualifications

Education/Training: A high school diploma or equivalent required. Bachelor’s degree
preferred.

Available Shifts

40 hours Monday – Thursday 11:00 PM – 9:00 AM

30 hours Friday – Saturday – Sunday 11:00 PM – 9:00 AM


Skill(s): Proficient reading, writing, grammar, and mathematics skills; proficient interpersonal
relations and communicative skills; ability to tolerate defiant and aggressive behavior and
frequent stressful situations; moderate PC skills, including Microsoft Office software;
understanding of behavioral theory and its practical application; thorough knowledge of
treatment services for emotionally disturbed children; thorough knowledge/understanding of
applicable laws and regulations, i.e. PA Residential Regulations (3800) and PA Child
Protective Services Law; knowledge of Crisis Prevention/Emergency Safety Intervention;
visual and auditory skills; valid driver's license required/clean driving record.
Experience: A minimum of two (2) years of related experience normally required.

General Responsibilities
Responsible for providing care and treatment services for the children served by Gemma
Services through identifying environmental, social, physical, emotional, and trauma-based
variables. Responsible for modeling, performing and training behavioral management and
crisis prevention/intervention techniques within the policies of Gemma Services, Safe Crisis
Management and the Trauma Recovery Model.; Coordinating work within the department as
well as with other divisions and departments; reporting pertinent information to the immediate
supervisor or Executive-on-Duty; responding to inquiries or requests for information.

Mental Health Worker – Overnight 


Essential Duties

2. Provides overnight care and services for the children served by Gemma Services of which the
following are illustrative:
a. At the beginning of the work shift, becomes informed of which children are sleeping
on the unit.
b. Ensures that all children sleep in their own beds.
c. Checks each individual child (by looking at a body part) every 15 minutes;
initials log sheets verifying child observation checks were completed as each
check is completed.
d. During a shift when two MHW-Overnight staff are working together on a unit,
staff must alternate 15-minute bed checks hourly. Logs must be completed in
real-time (not before or significantly after the check is completed).
e. Monitors and resets the motion detection system as needed throughout the night.
Outside of the 15-minute bed checks, checks the bedroom when the motion
detection system is triggered.
f. Remains fully awake and alert overnight; closely observes hallway in the
interims between room checks. Provide a high level of supervision for all
children in adhering to the supervision, discipline and behavioral management
policies.
g. Awakens enuretic/encopretic children as scheduled so that they may use the
bathroom; assist with changing soiled bed linens and launders same, as needed.
h. Assist with morning wake up and preparing children for school. Provides clear
and consistent structure for children as they are beginning their daytime
routine.
i. Prepare children to attend school and bring them to the designated area.
j. Updates communication log, morning sheet, children's point sheets, and other
paperwork as required each morning.
k. Communicates health needs or concerns to the EOD and healthcare office.
l. Uses and models correct Safe Crisis Management (SCM), as well as other agency
trained behavioral management techniques, when situations warrant, in
accordance with SS/MLS policies, procedures and applicable Commonwealth,
Federal and other regulatory bodies.
