About the role

Job Description:

JOB PURPOSE:

The Senior Design Engineer/Senior Designer is responsible for designing, developing, and implementing manufacturing equipment and processes. This role requires deep expertise in mechanical design, fabrication methods, and the principles of manufacturability. The Senior Design Engineer/Designer works closely with the in-house fabrication and machinist team to bring designs from concept to reality, ensuring robust and practical solutions that align with production needs. This position involves hands-on engineering at the machine design level, solving complex challenges, and driving innovation in equipment and system development.

DESCRIPTION OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

Machine and Equipment Design

  • Develop detailed designs for manufacturing equipment, fixtures, and tooling using CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks).
  • Design systems and machinery that improve process flow, increase throughput, and enhance product quality.
  • Perform engineering calculations, including load analysis, material selection, and thermal/stress simulations, to ensure designs meet performance requirements.
  • Collaborate with the in-house fabrication and machinist team to ensure designs are manufacturable, cost-effective, and aligned with production capabilities.
  • Specify materials, components, and fabrication techniques to ensure durability and functionality of designs.
  • Troubleshoot issues during the build phase, making adjustments to designs to address manufacturing or assembly challenges.

Project Management

  • Plan, execute, and oversee engineering projects from concept through installation and validation.
  • Develop detailed project plans, including timelines, budgets, and resource allocation, to meet objectives.
  • Coordinate with production, maintenance, and quality teams to ensure seamless implementation of new equipment or processes.
  • Monitor project progress and resolve technical or operational issues to minimize delays or cost overruns.
  • Conduct design reviews to incorporate feedback from the fabrication team and ensure seamless production.

Collaboration and Technical Expertise

  • Work closely with production teams to understand operational challenges and ensure design solutions meet practical requirements.
  • Work closely with machinists, fabricators, and assembly teams to translate design concepts into high-quality finished products.
  • Provide technical guidance during equipment commissioning, including troubleshooting and performance validation.
  • Stay updated on the latest advancements in manufacturing technologies, materials, and automation solutions.
  • Act as the technical expert on machine design projects, providing guidance to ensure alignment with production objectives.

Documentation and Reporting

  • Create and maintain detailed technical documentation, including equipment drawings, process flow diagrams, and work instructions.
  • Prepare and present project updates, cost analyses, and engineering reports to stakeholders and leadership teams.
  • Ensure all designs and processes comply with applicable safety, environmental, and quality standards.
  • Maintain organized records of engineering designs, test results, and process changes for future reference.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:  (To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.  The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required).

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related field, or a minimum 5-7 years of experience in manufacturing equipment design, process engineering, or a related field
  • Proven experience in leading complex engineering projects in a manufacturing environment
  • Proficient in CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or similar) for equipment design
  • Strong understanding of manufacturing processes, automation systems, and fabrication techniques
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills, with attention to detail
  • Strong communication and project management abilities
  • Willingness to travel up to 70% within the US (Remote), with potential irregularity depending on specific projects, or work on site in Ogden, UT, with travel up to 40%
