The Business Services Directorate (BSD) provides high-quality business services to support the Lab's research initiatives by participating in cross-functional teams with a focus on risk mitigation and cost management, which is a critical component to the Lab's success. Led by the Chief Financial Officer, Brookhaven’s Business Services Directorate includes the Budget Office, Fiscal Services Division, Procurement & Property Management Division, Chief Financial Office, and the Business Operations Offices. The Directorate manages a broad range of financial activities, including the planning and implementation of the Lab’s fiscal matters and its approximately $700 million annual budget.

Position Description
 

The Business Services Directorate (BSD) has an opening for a Senior Business Specialist position within the Environment, Safety & Health Directorate (ESH) Business Operations Office. This individual will report to the Business Operations Manager (BOM) for the Director’s Office and Environment, Safety & Health Directorates.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

This position will provide financial support for all ESH Departments, including, but not limited to:

  • Budget/Forecasting – Construct and analyze the budgets for the position’s respective areas.

  • Variance Analysis – Create and provide monthly analytics examining impacts from monthly expenses versus funding.

  • Rate Development – Create and analyze ESH inter-departmental rates during the year and trend variances.

  • Personnel Forecasting – Develop and analyze the budget for labor costs and trend variances.

  • Journal Entries – Create and approve journal entries for expenses.

  • Ad-Hoc Reports – Create and develop reports upon request.

  • Deadlines – Responsible for applying independent judgment that demonstrates the ability to prioritize and effectively meet required deadlines.

  • Customer Service Focus – Handle any requests that need to be addressed.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related business field or equivalent experience on the basis of 2:1 (experience:college) years.

  • Ten (10) years full-time, directly related experience.

  • In-depth hands-on working knowledge of financial principles including budgeting, forecasting, financial reporting, and variance analysis.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office products, including advanced skills with Excel and pivot table creation.

  • Oral and written communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to learn, identify business risk issues, and make recommendations for alternative solutions to management.

  • Knowledge of GAAP/CAS/FAR requirements as related to areas of responsibility.

  • Knowledge of Enterprise Resource Planning Systems (ERP) including the extraction and reporting of data.

  • Must be self-motivated, resourceful, and organized; taking ownership of all assigned work.

  • Should be a flexible team player who will successfully interact with other laboratory staff.

  • Applies independent judgment that demonstrates ability to prioritize and effectively handle deadlines.

  • Able to identify and resolve issues encountered within own area of responsibility; act proactively to develop solutions and avoid problems.

  • Understanding of standard business functions and procedures (A/P, A/R, Purchase Orders, etc.).

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Experience using PeopleSoft Financial software to generate queries and reports.

  • Rate development and analysis experience.

  • PowerPoint presentations.

  • Knowledge of BNL policies, practices, and procedures.

  • Familiarity with Workday Human Resources software.

Environmental, Health & Safety Requirements:

  • The ability to work at a computer/keyboard for extended periods is essential.

  • Ability to concentrate on accuracy.

Compensation:

Brookhaven Laboratory is committed to providing fair, equitable, and competitive compensation. The full salary range for this position is $97,500 - $146,250 / year. Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualification, education, and experience and considered with the internal peer group.
