Overview:

The main function of this position is to support the Manufacturing Demonstration Facility and its affiliated groups with a primary focus on running and maintaining manual and CNC machine tools, EDM equipment, and metrology equipment. You should have significant experience operating machine tools, a good understanding of machining processes and cutting tools, significant NC programming experience, and moderate understanding of additive manufacturing.  You will likewise need to learn how to service and maintain the commercial and prototype machining systems.  In addition, you will be called on to help fabricate research components, assemble test fixtures, and conduct tests in support of Manufacturing Demonstration Facility activities.

 

Major Responsibilities / Duties:

  • Job duties include preparation of materials, maintenance and operation of the equipment, conducting experiments on multiple materials and multiple systems. These activities will support the ORNL Manufacturing Demonstration Facility.  Your work will consist of operating the machines in support of DOE and SPP programs. You will maintain the equipment by monitoring the inventory and providing periodic maintenance. You will help select and create tooling and fixturing, prepare NC programs based on drawings and models, fabricate research components, and perform cutting tests in support of research programs. You will also support research activities by assembling test beds and helping maintain the work areas.

Basic Qualifications:

  • High school diploma

  • Documented proficiency in the operation of manual machine tools, EDM equipment, and metrology equipment.

  • Proficiency in NC programming, including at least MasterCAM is required.

  • You must possess at least ten years of experience in machining.

  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
