Position Purpose and Summary

The Safety and Security Specialist will support the operational safety and security efforts for Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.’s 57th National Convention, with an expected attendance of 20,000 participants. This position will serve as an integral member of the on-site safety team, responding to incidents, supporting emergency operations and assisting with the coordination of safety resources and logistics. The Specialist will work under the direction of the Director and Senior Specialist to maintain a safe and secure environment across all venues.


Duties and Responsibilities

· Serve as an on-site responder for incidents and emergencies, providing immediate support and coordination with public safety partners.

· Support the setup, operation and staffing of the Event Security Operations Center (ESOC).

· Maintain situational awareness through radio communications, incident tracking and monitoring of security alerts.

· Assist with distribution, tracking and recovery of critical safety equipment (e.g., radios, medical kits, safety vests).

· Complete timely and accurate incident reports and event activity logs for documentation and post-event review.

· Provide logistical support to field security teams, off-duty law enforcement and medical teams as needed.

· Participate in daily security briefings and contribute to operational adjustments based on evolving conditions.

· Assist with event staff and volunteer safety orientations as directed.

· Support crowd management efforts, access control and enforcement of venue safety policies.

· Provide general assistance to the Director and Senior Specialist in managing event resources and incident response coordination.

· Performs other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills and Abilities)

· Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, emergency management, homeland security or related field. Advanced degree preferred.

· Minimum of one (1) year of progressive experience in public safety, law enforcement, military or corporate/event security.

· Demonstrated success managing security for events.

· Experience with National Incident Management System (NIMS) and Incident Command System (ICS).

· Proven ability to work collaboratively with public safety agencies and venue management.

· Strong communication, problem-solving, and crisis management skills.

· Ability to work long hours, including nights and weekends, during the National Convention assignment.

· Proof of comprehensive COVID-19 vaccination is required.
