Job Summary:

The Course Director for the Global Health and Medical Practice course at the Brigham Young University (BYU) School of Medicine will play a vital leadership role in delivering and continuously improving this cornerstone longitudinal course in the pre-clerkship Phase 1 curriculum. This faculty member will guide students through the development of core clinical skills, professional identity formation, and medical care, in the context of culture, available resources, and foundational principles of Christ-centered medical practice. This course spans the first 11 months of the MD program and emphasizes global health awareness, simulation-based education, standardized patient encounters, and an integrative understanding of healthcare systems, cultural contexts, and religious influences around the world.

Position Start Date:  February 1, 2026

Required Degree: 

MD, DO, or equivalent degree, with clinical experience. The required degree must be completed by the start date.

Experience:

  • Demonstrated experience in teaching clinical skills in undergraduate medical education.
  • Experience or interest in global health, humanitarian medicine, or health equity.
  • Ability to collaborate across disciplines and work in interdisciplinary teams.
  • Demonstrated scholarly activity and commitment to educational innovation.
  • Alignment with and commitment to the mission, values, and spiritual aims of Brigham Young University and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
  • Experience with simulation-based medical education and standardized patient programs.
  • Familiarity with international health systems, global health curricula, and cross-cultural medical practice.
  • Track record of scholarship in medical education, global health, or primary care.
  • Preferred: Understanding of LCME accreditation standards.

Duties/Expectations: 

Duties/Expectations:

  • Provide academic leadership in designing and delivering the Global Health and Medical Practice course.
  • Oversee teaching and assessment of clinical skills throughout Phase 1, including physical exam, communication, and documentation.
  • Integrate simulation-based instruction and standardized patient experiences into the curriculum.
  • Facilitate professional identity formation and instill principles of Christ-centered care.
  • Introduce students to global health systems, humanitarian contexts, and international perspectives on healthcare delivery.
  • Ensure discussion of social determinants of health and health disparities within a global context.
  • Collaborate with the Phase 1 Director, Thread Leaders, and other course directors to ensure vertical and horizontal curriculum integration of global health and standards of medical practice.
  • Mentor students in their personal and professional development.
  • Participate in curriculum review, improvement processes, and accreditation-related activities.
  • May be assigned additional responsibilities within the School of Medicine, including participation in teaching, research, committee service, and other institutional initiatives.
