About the role
Mission of the Role
This role will work in-office at our Minneapolis Campus (accross from Mall of America and MSP Airport).
This position has primary responsibility for hands-on design and support of SICK products through the entire product lifecycle. Work with a multi-national, cross-functional team to design, develop, and test new product offerings and enhance performance of existing production lines.

- Develop and execute projects while adhering to all relevant SICK product development processes covering design control, quality, and company standards and regulations and national and international regulatory body requirements.
- Support the entire product lifecycle including change management, product support, major and minor releases, and phase out.
- Work with internal and external resources to ensure all project technical, cost, and schedule requirements are met.
- Author documents, reports, correspondence, and other technical content.
- Plan, develop, and execute tests to verify the operation, reliability, and performance of software to guarantee product quality is incorporated into the design.
- Participate in reviews with peers and internal project stakeholders.
- Collaborate with Product Management to ensure new and innovative products and solutions are available to SICK customers.
- Contribute to project teams involving cross-functional participants.
- Use proof of concepts, prototypes, and MVPs to test, refine, verify, and validate new ideas.
- Develop a working knowledge of current SICK products, new development products, and engineering design processes.
- Work independently on large assigned projects.
- Train and guide teammates and ensure they have the proper knowledge of SICK processes and procedures.
- Perform all mechanical engineering functions of product development including engineering drawings/specifications, bill of materials generation, implementation, deployment, issue resolution, management of technical requirements, assessment and mitigation of risks, and creation of time and cost estimations.
- Analyze and report the effectiveness and feasibility of new materials, prototypes and final parts. Verify and evaluate test results to ensure compliance with tolerance limits of required specifications.
- Includes testing and analysis results regarding strength of materials, weights, forces and stresses, proper fit and interference analysis.
- Ensure product compliance with relevant standards, marks, and agencies.
- Use CAD, project management, and collaboration tools where necessary to drive and streamline product development.
- Carry out other job relevant duties and responsibilities as may be assigned or required.
Key Qualifications
Qualifications, Skills & Competencies
- Experience: 5+ years of professional experience in mechanical development.
- Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering is required. Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field is preferred.
- Certifications: None is required.
- Position-specific Qualifications:
- Strong problem solving, algorithm development, analytical, design, and debugging skills.
- Thorough understanding of technical issues and the ability to perform root cause analysis and resolve issues.
- Able to communicate and work with all levels of developers, managers, and business representatives.
- Demonstrate strong oral and written communication skills.
- Strong motivation and ability to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment supporting a business-critical production environment.
- Experience with mechanical design, development, debug, and deployment using Solidworks or equivalent.
- Knowledge of drafting standards, geometric dimensioning, and tolerancing.
- Knowledge of product approvals and approval agencies: UL, CE, TUV, etc.
- Knowledge of testing and data interpretation, including vibration analysis, non-destructive testing, failure analysis, stress and strain analysis.
- Computer/Technological: Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Internet applications; CAD, project management, and collaboration tools; Solidworks or equivalent.
- Language: Professional written and spoken fluency in English required.
- Schedule: Generally Monday to Friday, full time; be on-call on some weekends (if required).
- General Working Conditions: Be able to usually work in an office environment; flexible (hybrid) work arrangements available.
