El Puente seeks a responsible and committed Maintenance Worker/Cleaner to join El Puente’s team. Founded in 1982, El Puente is a youth-centered organization that uses the arts and education to advance racial and environmental justice. Our mission is to inspire and nurture leadership for peace and justice, working as a human rights institution in NYC and Puerto Rico with national and international impact. El Puente creates community-led self-determination movements as a high-impact youth and community development organization through a holistic leadership and membership program model.

El Puente integrates its activities and community campaigns within its six Youth Leadership Centers, and its nationally recognized public high school, the El Puente Academy for Peace and Justice. Organizing in North Brooklyn, Puerto Rico, and beyond, El Puente remains at the forefront of community & youth development, and as such, initiates social policy locally and nationally.

As a staff member of El Puente, the Maintenance Worker/Cleaner is expected to uphold and work within the mission, philosophy, and principles of the organization.

Position Summary:

The Maintenance/Cleaner Worker is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for all staff, participants, and visitors of the Cornerstone program. This role ensures that all areas of the facility are kept in good condition, supports the smooth operation of activities, and adheres to safety and sanitation standards.

Key Responsibilities

1. Cleaning & Sanitation

• Sweep, mop, and vacuum floors in all common areas, offices, classrooms, and restrooms.
• Dust and wipe down furniture, windows, and surfaces.
• Clean and disinfect restrooms, replenish supplies (toilet paper, soap, paper towels).
• Empty garbage cans and recycling bins regularly.
• Disinfect high-touch areas (door handles, light switches, equipment) daily.

2. Facility Maintenance

• Monitor the facility for any repairs needed (lighting, plumbing, furniture, fixtures) and promptly report issues to the supervisor.
• Assist with minor repairs when possible (e.g., changing light bulbs, tightening screws).
• Maintain outdoor areas by sweeping entryways, clearing debris, and ensuring safe walkways.

3. Event & Program Support

• Set up and break down rooms for program activities, meetings, and events (tables, chairs, equipment).
• Assist staff with moving supplies, furniture, and program materials as needed.
• Ensure gym, multipurpose rooms, and recreational areas are clean and ready for use.

4. Safety & Compliance

• Follow all health and safety protocols, including cleaning schedules and proper use of cleaning chemicals.
• Maintain organized and labeled storage for cleaning supplies and equipment.
• Respond to spills or safety hazards immediately to prevent accidents.

5. Collaboration

• Work closely with program staff to address cleaning and maintenance needs promptly.
• Communicate effectively with supervisors about supply needs and any facility concerns.

Qualifications

• Bilingual Requirement:  fluency in English and Spanish (additional languages a plus).
• Schedule flexibility 
• Reliable, punctual, and able to work independently.
• Ability to work with a team

• Willingness to travel locally within North Brook
