About Houston-Galveston Area Council  

The Houston-Galveston Area Council is one of the largest regional planning commissions in the country with a diverse service area of 13 counties and more than 7 million people. We are the pulse of our region addressing issues that cross city limits and county lines every single day.

What will I be doing? 

Perform complex legislative work. Work involves serving as a liaison between the Houston-Galveston Area Council, member and nonmember governments, state agencies and governmental and legislative entities. May provide guidance to others. Works under general supervision, with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

ü Participates in agency activities related to council meetings, commissioners court meetings the state legislative session, legislative hearings, and meetings with elected officials, legislative staff, and other liaisons

ü Coordinates agency interaction with local municipalities, counties, state, and federal agencies

ü Coordinates responses to legislative inquiries and reviews and edits legislative correspondence

ü Monitors county and city agendas, and standing and interim committee schedules, and communicates relevant information to agency management.

ü Monitors upcoming elections and subsequent results and provides analysis on impacts to the Houston-Galveston Area Council and the region

ü Prepares report summaries of meetings and hearings. Assists with preparing reports on newly enacted laws and pending, local, state and federal legislation.

ü Prepares talking points, and other relevant information needed for meetings with elected officials

ü Assists with developing proper protocol and procedures for communicating with legislators and staff

ü May identify a need for, develop, schedule, and conduct legislative training for employees within an agency

ü Performs related work as assigned

 

Key Qualifications  

ü General understanding of the role and function of a regional planning commission

ü Demonstrated experience in strategic communications, public relations, or related roles

ü Knowledge of the federal and state political process

ü Outstanding written and verbal communication skills

 

Do you have…  

ü Bachelor’s degree in an applicable academic discipline or related field of study 

ü 5 years of experience working with local government, nonprofit programs, or in job-related duties. 

 

Preferred Qualifications 

ü Degree in Political Science, Business Administration, Public Administration or related field of study

ü Experience working with federal and state legislative processes and state government administration
