This position is eligible for a hybrid Flexible Work Arrangement (FWA) (on-campus and remote work). FWA arrangements are subject to manager approval and may shift due to changes in business needs. 

Purpose

Reporting to Landmarks’ Deputy Director, the Assistant Director of Collections is responsible for managing the realization of all new public art projects, from inception to installation. This position interfaces with project partners including artists, architects, landscape architects, campus stakeholders, and others to coordinate project logistics in the implementation of new works of art on campus. This position manages Landmarks Video program and oversees the Landmarks technology manager.

The Assistant Director of Collections is also responsible for the care and conservation of Landmarks’ public art collection, comprised of more than fifty works of modern and contemporary art in a range of media. The position oversees both routine maintenance and any special conservation or restoration required. It also manages Landmarks Preservation Guild (a volunteer cohort) and may supervise student assistants, interns, or others as required.

Responsibilities

Public art project management

  • Coordinate and liaise with all involved parties (artists, galleries, architects, landscape architects, contractors, vendors, etc.) to execute new public art projects

  • Coordinate campus departments on capital improvement projects involving Landmarks, including the Office of Planning, Design & Construction (PDC), Technical Review Teams, and others as required

  • Schedule and maintain agendas for quarterly PDC construction meetings

  • Initiate campaigns to promote awareness of Landmarks’ procedures among campus project managers

  • Assist the Director as liaison to the Committee for the Review of Art

  • In the development of new projects, assist the Director with creating proposals and securing approvals from all necessary campus stakeholders

  • Manage contracts, agreements, and insurance with artists, galleries, art handlers, conservators, and other contractors in coordination with the collections manager

  • Manage project budgets and provide projections that support project teams and development initiatives

  • Oversee the maintenance of a collection archive, including all documentation and project related materials

  • Manage development, fabrication, installation, and replacement of art signage

Collection management and conservation

  • Assist the Director and the Deputy Director with long-range planning and budgeting for the care, maintenance, and conservation of the collection

  • Monitor works, identify needs and coordinate treatments in collaboration with contracted conservators, artists, lenders, Landmarks’ technology manager, and campus service providers

  • Maintain ongoing relationship with the Metropolitan Museum of Art, which includes routine communications, site visit coordination, and loan renewal oversight

  • Maintain relationships and routine communications with campus delegates who monitor works in the collection

  • Oversee all conservation efforts as needed

  • Maintain the 20-year routine maintenance budget projection
