Job Description

Position Summary:

The Automation Technician will report to the Maintenance Supervisor and will be responsible for a wide variety of automation, vision, assembly, and injection molding equipment. This will include projects on new automation requirements, robot and PLC programming, machine connectivity, alarm and discrimination configurations, improvements to existing equipment, general repairs and preventative maintenance.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Support production technicians by troubleshooting equipment and making improvements to equipment as-needed (Safety opportunities, user interface, cycle time, quality opportunities, standardization efforts). This will include a rotating on-call schedule on weekends. 
  • Function as point-person for new projects involving automation, assembly, or vision equipment. Work with vendors to understand proposed designs, safety and quality considerations and capabilities, and train others on how the equipment works.
  • Drive integration of systems to hardware covering a variety of sensors (RJG eDart, production cell HMI systems, intelligent valves, PLC’s, Central SCADA systems).
  • Setting up performance monitoring systems to track and log performance over time of specific parameters as assigned/specified
  • Configuring alarms and notifications for production equipment and supporting systems
  • Setting up real-time machine data collection systems
  • Support training efforts with other maintenance and production technicians.
  • Act as the go-between person for vendors for new automation equipment, and for troubleshooting existing equipment.
  • Provide background and explanations on programs, vision systems, robots, or any piece of automation equipment, to both technical and non-technical employees, so that we can work together to understand how things “Do” and “Do Not” work. This usually becomes necessary for Safety and Quality projects.
  • Comply with OSHA and other regulatory agencies in the design, repair, and installation of all automated equipment.
  • Use electrical prints to define problems and to troubleshoot with a logical, step-by-step process. This will include reviewing prints for non-automation equipment as well, as most of the our automation equipment is integrated into machines or other auxiliary equipment.
  • Participate in Design Review meetings that require assemblies or automation perspectives.
  • Program, Install, Maintain and Repair PLC Hardware and Ladder Logic, Robot Programs, Inspection Systems/Part Discrimination.
  • Support manufacturing engineers and manufacturing team in continuous improvement efforts.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Minimum two-year degree in Industrial Technology or equivalent certification.
  • Minimum of 1-3 years of work experience in the automation / robotics field, preferred.
  • Experience with vision system design and programming
  • Computer, electrical, electronic, and mechanical skills.
