Principal Research Technologist - Orthopedics Res Sammarco
Mayo ClinicAbout the role
The Sammarco lab focuses on limb regeneration after traumatic injury, investigating mechanisms underlying impaired regeneration and identifying therapeutics to activate latent regenerative abilities or improve the integration of prosthetics. The overall goal is to improve quality of life for people with limb loss or limb differences. Dr. Sammarco and her team in the Limb and Musculoskeletal Regenerative Research Laboratory use a mouse model of digit tip amputation to understand the complex interactions of a multi-tissue regenerative system and identify the mechanisms that drive cell differentiation and patterning during the regenerative process. Current projects focus on 1) mitochondrial remodeling and metabolism during limb regeneration and patterning, 2) the role of sensory nerves in bone and soft tissue regeneration, and 3) the impact of inflammation during regenerative healing and fibrotic scarring.
The Principal Research Technologist would direct ongoing bench and animal work within the lab related to regeneration. Duties would include routine molecular bench work combined with use of animal models (animal handling, injections, surgeries, sample collection) as well as downstream processing (histology, flow cytometry, cell culture) under supervision of the PI. Candidate should be highly goal and detail oriented and have strong teamwork skills. Training will be provided on many in-lab techniques but previous experience working with mice and some molecular technique is highly preferred.
In addition to conducting research within the lab, the successful candidate will manage various aspects of the lab, including IACUC and safety compliance, lab ordering. As such, a high degree of organization and a working knowledge of Microsoft Office is essential. Oversees projects within the laboratory and assumes significant responsibility for the day to day operation of lab activities, including the design of research studies and experiments. Monitors results, responds to unusual outcomes; develops and implements modifications. Collects, enters analyzes, and interprets data. Possesses advanced knowledge of lab practices and directs and teaches others in lab practices. Provides leadership for lab operations and staff. Serves as a mentor to lab staff. Possesses extensive knowledge in specialized field of study. Contributes significantly to grant proposals. Authors and co-authors publications. Presents at National Meetings.
Independently sets up and performs experiments and procedures in support of lab goals and grant commitments (e.g. assays, cell/tissue culture, animal studies, etc.). Initiates and directs, in coordination with the PI, the planning, design and modification of studies and experiments in the research lab setting. Directs other personnel working on the project. Collects, enters, summarizes, and analyzes data. Oversees and assists with the training of technicians, students, postdoctoral researchers, and other lab personnel. Works with minimal supervision and performs assignments independently as discussed and approved by Principal Investigator. Prior experience in all techniques is not required – personnel will be fully trained in all techniques within the lab.
Requires master's degree in biology, chemistry, other relevant science with 8 years of research laboratory experience, or a Bachelors degree and 10 years of relevant laboratory experience. Requires first authorship of a scientific publication as well as one presentation at a national level, or equivalent pre-requisite experience in a setting where this was not possible. Ph.D. in biology, chemistry, or other relevant science preferred. Must have demonstrated abilities in experimental procedures, statistical analysis techniques, development of experiments, and troubleshooting in a laboratory setting. Requires ability to work independently; including experience providing independent oversight of research project(s). Must be able to work with a variety of people at all levels both within and outside of the institution.
Additional Experience and/or Preferred Qualifications:
Applicant should have some experience in mouse breeding colony and handling. Applicant should demonstrate the ability to execute molecular techniques with strong molecular assay skills. Prior experience may include molecular techniques such as immunohistochemistry, cell culture assays, and qPCR. Applicant should be familiar with GraphPad and Adobe Illustrator, or similar programs, to aid in preparation of papers and grants. Personnel will be fully trained in all additional techniques within the lab.
