Primary Responsibilities

The Oncology Financial Counselor is responsible for meeting with patients and communicating insurance benefits and responsibilities to develop appropriate plans to assist the patient.  The Financial Counselor assists in completing all patient assistance programs, drug copay programs, drug copay foundation applications required to receive external eligibility and internal financial assistance as well as if needed submitting Medical Assistance applications (Adult Category, Healthy Horizon, BCCPT, Emergency Medical Assistance, MAWD). 

Essential Functions

  • Working knowledge of healthcare insurance, particularly Medicare and Medicaid.
  • Working knowledge of Oncology Patient Assistance Programs.  
  • Stays abreast of changes in major insurance plans and Oncology Patient Assistance Programs.
  • Enrollment of different Patient Assistance Programs.
  • Understanding of hospital and physician claims and payments to identify patient responsibility.
  • Submitting claims to Patient Assistance Programs after insurance payments
  • Strong Microsoft Office Excel skills.
  • Able to prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment.
  • Highly self-motivated, self-directed, and attentive to detail.
  • Strong written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Communicates with the Medical Oncology Team and Management on issues (verification, registration, obtaining benefits) and providing solutions to ensure that issues are settled.
  • Interacts with co-workers, visitors, and other staff consistent with the core values of the Hospital.

Education                               

High School diploma or GED required. Associates degree in Business/Healthcare preferred. Work experience may be considered in lieu of the Associates degree.

Experience Requirements

  • Previous experience required in one or more of the following roles: Patient Access Representative,
    Financial Counselor, Customer Service Representative, Patient Accounts Billing Representative, Patient Accounts Collections Representative.
  • Knowledge of hospital and physician billing and collections.
  • Knowledge of State and Federal financial assistance programs.
  • Clear, effective communication skills; mature approach to problem solving for all types of issues;
  • Skills in using PC computers and computer applications
  • Knowledge of medical terminology; negotiating skills; and detail orientation.
  • To perform this job successfully, an individual must demonstrate competence in each essential duty.
