About the role
Under limited supervision, performs phlebotomy, processes specimens, handles client inquiries, conducts waived testing, contributes to pre-analytic laboratory tasks and assists with bedside procedures.
HOURS: 4:00AM-12:30 Monday-Friday one weekend a month is required and rotating holidays. Willing to float between MSRH and MCC as needed.
- Perform venipuncture and capillary puncture to collect blood specimens from patients.
- Ensure patient comfort and safety during the phlebotomy process.
- Receive and accession specimens into the laboratory information system (LIS).
- Prepare and aliquot specimens for various laboratory tests following established protocols.
- Provide information regarding specimen collection, test requisitions, and laboratory procedures.
- Address inquiries and concerns, escalating complex issues to the appropriate personnel.
- Assist in the preparation and setup of laboratory equipment and instruments.
- Ensure the proper handling and transportation of specimens within the laboratory.
- Inventories supplies, equipment and requisitions as needed.
- Provides in-service training and precepts lab assistant.
- Participates in developing best practices in clinical workflows.
- Perform other duties as assigned
- Ability to work independently within established guidelines, apply problem-solving skills, meet deadlines and meet urgent patient, provider, and system needs
- Ability to collaborate with laboratory staff to maintain a clean and organized work environment.
- Ability to perform waived testing procedures according to established protocols and regulatory guidelines.
- Knowledge of recording and maintaining accurate documentation of waived test results.
- Ability to verify the accuracy of patient information and specimen labeling.
- Knowledge of labeling, documenting, and preparing collected specimens for transport to the laboratory.
- Knowledge of relevant laboratory safety and infection control protocols.
- Knowledge of laboratory information systems (LIS) is an asset.
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Completion of a certified phlebotomy program is preferred
- 5 years' experience in phlebotomy and specimen processing within a clinical laboratory setting.
