This position requires you to maintain internet service and a mobile phone with voice and data plans to be used when required for work.

Purpose

This position will need to provide journeyman or mid-level skills for the fabrication, installation, operation, and routine or emergency maintenance and or repair of University fiber-optics, copper cable for data and telecommunications facilities.

Responsibilities

  • Placing fiber and copper cabling in manholes.
  • Placing fiber and copper cabling thru university tunnel system.
  • Setting up work area protection/including Safety hazard warnings.
  • Driving university owned vehicles to job sites will be required for this position.
  • Work area cleanup of cabling and materials.
  • Entering time to work orders.
  • Assist in the construction, maintenance and fabrication of facilities and equipment.
  • Lead and assist contract labor.
  • Other related functions as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • High school graduation or GED.
  • Five or more years of experience in the installation and/or repair of outside plant facilities.
  • Ability to work in adverse weather conditions and in construction areas of new buildings or renovated areas of existing building.
  • Ability to read and understand safety placards and follow OSHA rules and regulation.

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Completion of related technical courses.
  • Knowledge of copper and fiber termination practices.
  • Knowledge of cable pressure systems repair.
  • Knowledge of transferring outside cabling to building plenum cabling.
  • Knowledge to distinguish the difference between copper and fiber cables.
  • Ability to build a telecom or data room from start to finish with equipment racks and cable ladder trays.
  • Ability to operate generators and power equipment such as drills, saws and manhole pumps and blowers.

Driving Required

This job requires a class "C" operator's driver's license. The applicant selected must provide a current three year driving record from the current state of residence. If not currently a Texas residen
