Summary:

Provides professional working proficient interpreting services, both live and on video, in various settings at Gallaudet University and in local and national arenas; contributes positively as a professional to GIS, the Gallaudet University community, and the larger community beyond Gallaudet University; and consistently aims to the highest standards of professionalism.


 

Job Description:

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:

A. Interpreting and Skills Expectations

I. Provides approximately 25-28 weekly hours of interpreting to the Gallaudet community as assigned.

II. Prepares for each assignment by minimally:
a. reviewing textbooks or other materials as appropriate to assignments;
b. meeting with presenters to review content and determine the appropriate language and form of communication;
c. and assessing logistical arrangements.

III. Actively seeks assignments that will increase breadth and depth of interpreting experience within the Gallaudet community.

IV. Produces a professional working proficient level of message    equivalency between ASL and English.


B. Professional and Behavioral Expectations

I. Adheres to the RID/NAD Code of Professional Conduct.

II. Maintains RID/NAD certification for duration of employment.

III. Adheres to Gallaudet University and GIS codes of conduct as outlined in the Administration and Operations Manual and the GIS Staff Handbook.

IV. Maintains and submits all required documentation.

V. Meets regularly with the interpreter manager to review performance and activities, including, but not limited to, progress on yearly goals, consumer evaluations, scheduling input and ideas for service enhancement.

VI. Assists with special projects or other duties as assigned.


C. Leadership Activities


I. Coordinates interpreting services for large meetings, conferences and other events; serve as onsite contact for clients and interpreters and supervisor for freelance and staff interpreters.

II. Serves as a mentor for other interpreters.

III. Supervises and supports practicum/internship students as assigned.

IV. Aspires to the highest standards of leadership.


SPECIFICATIONS:

Applicants must meet all of the following requirements:

1. Have an B.A. degree.
2. Have at least one of the following interpreting certifications at time of hire: CSC, CI&CT, NAD IV or V, NIC.
3. Have six (6) years of professional interpreting experience of which three (3) years are post certification.
4. Have documented experience interpreting in a diverse range of assignments.
5. Have documented experience working in interpreting teams.
6. Demonstrate a professional working proficient level of interpreting between ASL and English.

• a detailing of membership on boards/committees supporting organizations for Deaf individuals or organizations for interpreters and
• a list of other contributions made to the field of interpreting.
