Job Summary:
Assists with the administration of all aspects of the accounting and general ledger process, which includes performing a broad range of accounting duties to ensure accuracy in financial reporting and maintaining financial records for one or more funded programs. This position also assumes responsibility for assembling, analyzing, classifying, and recording data relevant to the Tribe’s finances, thus ensuring compliance with GAAP and GASB.
Essential Functions:
- Maintains financial reports, records, and general ledger accounts for fund accounting.
- Prepares journal entries, analyses, and account reconciliations and assisting with monthly, quarterly and annual close processes.
- Contributes to the development and review of annual operating budgets and revenue/expenditure projections.
- Reviews monthly, quarterly, and annual general ledger reports to verify all recurring transactions and accruals are recorded appropriately.
- Maintains documentation for accounts payable, accounts receivable and treasury.
- Performs monthly balance sheet reconciliations.
- Meets processing and reporting deadlines.
- Responds to information requests, reviewing financial statements, and assisting with external audits.
- Ensures compliance with GAAP.
- Assists management and others within the department as needed. Provides a high level of customer service with respect to internal customers and Tribal members.
- Records the cost of newly-acquired fixed assets, tracking existing fixed assets, recording depreciation, and accounting for disposition of fixed assets.
- Prepares journal entries related to general bank account, including incoming and outgoing wire transfers, monthly fees, grant income, credit card revenue and daily Medicare/Medicaid ACH/EFTs.
- Processes monthly grant drawdown requests for multiple grants and agencies. Monitors receipt of grant draw down funds.
- Works with other departments relating to internal sales, reimbursements, transfers, and other accounting issues.
- Calculates, records and maintains retainage payments.
- Utilizes appropriate accounting practices for prepaid expenses.
- Prepares and reporting 1099 tax documents for individuals and vendors.
- Administering Tribal Member loans, maintaining financial records, recording payments, distributing default letters, and completing timely and accurate loan files to the Finance Officer.
- Performs a variety of other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Education, Experience, and Licenses:
- Requires a Bachelor’s degree in Business or Accounting and 3 years of related experience.
- OR equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Driving Requirements:

Qualifications, Registrations, and Certifications:
- Strong understanding of accounting theory required.
- Requires knowledge of grant/contract compliance and requirements.
- Excellent writing, communication and interpersonal skills with a customer service focus required.
- Required to read, interpret and understand contract language, and financial reporting requirements.
- Must be highly detail oriented and organized in work.
- Proficiency with email and Microsoft Office applications required.
- Proven ability to work independently with little or no supervision, to make decisions, and have organization skills necessary to meet deadlines.
- Requires the use of judgment in the analysis of facts and circumstances surrounding individual problems or transactions and in the determination of actions to be taken within the limits of standard and accepted practice.
- Ability to coordinate information between Finance Office, Tribal Council and other Tribal departments required.
- Knowledge of administrative principles and practices as they relate to governmental organizations required.
- Ability to cooperatively and collaboratively work with all levels of employees, management, and external agencies to maximize performance, problem solving and results required.
- Ability to quickly obtain knowledge of Tribal financial policies and procedures required.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet critical deadlines in often fast-paced environment required.
- Knowledge of and sensitivity to Native American culture required.
