About the role

Summary:

At National Heritage Academies (NHA), the Senior Software Engineer is a key leader within the Innovation Development Department. This role will be responsible for ensuring that our software development projects serve the departmental goal of transforming NHA’s performance through data intelligence.

The ideal candidate for this position will have 8+ years of Full-Stack software engineering experience. They will have a passion for the revolution of the K-12 educational system. They will be leading and designing the technical solutions that will transform how our school system performs. They will need to act strategically. Constantly evaluating what actions, decisions, and projects will yield the most value. They will be given high levels of autonomy and authority to allow them to move quickly and efficiently. They will work closely with executives to understand high level objectives. They will use their expertise to propose and design solutions that address high level objectives. The selected individual will work out of the National Heritage Academies Service Center in Grand Rapids, Michigan. This position will have a hybrid schedule with 2 days per week in the office.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Full-Stack Software Development: Design, develop, and maintain complex software, ensuring high performance, scalability, and security.  Software will be for internal use, commercial use, and for deployment on mobile devices.
  • Architecture and Design: Collaborate with cross-functional teams to architect and design software solutions that align with business goals and industry best practices. 
  • Coding and Debugging: Write clean, efficient, and maintainable code while debugging and resolving complex technical issues. Be responsible for creating practices and processes that will be followed by the team.
  • Code Reviews: Run code reviews to maintain quality, promote coding standards, and mentor team members.
  • Technical Leadership: Provide technical leadership and guidance to the development team, making critical decisions on technology stack, frameworks, and tools.  Conduct trainings and retrospectives for the team.
  • Performance Optimization: Identify and implement optimizations to enhance the performance and efficiency of existing software systems.
  • Research and Conventions: Stay updated with industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices to drive innovation within the team and organization.
  • Maintenance strategy: Plan and execute the supporting, upgrading, and maintaining the of the numerous systems owned by our department. 
  • UI/UX design: Design and create a commercial grade UI/UX 
  • Innovation: Create novel solutions for unique situations.  Not all projects will have comparable solution to model after. Innovation will be required.

 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field.
  • 8+ years of experience as a software developer, with a strong portfolio of projects demonstrating expertise.
  • 8+ years of experience with database design and SQL.
  • Proficiency in multiple programming languages and platforms, but specifically .NET/C#, Angular, and MS SQL.
  • In-depth knowledge of software development methodologies, design patterns, best practices, and code testing.
  • Strong problem-solving and debugging skills.
  • Familiarity with modern software development tools, version control systems, and continuous integration/continuous delivery (CI/CD) pipelines.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
  • Leadership and mentoring abilities.
  • Experience with cloud computing platforms (Azure, AWS, Google Cloud).
  • Knowledge of containerization and orchestration technologies (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes).

 

Preferences:

  • Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field.
  • Experience building applications consuming from and feeding to a data warehouse.
  • Experience creating software for commercial sale and use.
  • Experience holding other roles in the SDLC.  PM, BA, QA, PO, SM, etc.
  • Experience in EdTech.
  • Experience as a consultant or freelancer.
  • Entrepreneurial experience.

 

This is an in-person position at our NHA Service Center located at 3850 Broadmoor Ave., Grand Rapids, MI.
