Overview:
We are seeking an accountant who will focus on oversight of the conference and controlled business expense (CBE) areas within the Accounting Operations Division and Business Services Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).
Major Duties/Responsibilities:
- Performs independent reconciliation and audit of closed conferences as governed by ORNL policies. Makes independent decisions on the appropriateness of costs based on internal guidance.
- Responsible for providing oversight and guidance on controlled business expenses (CBE) by auditing submitted expenses to determine compliance with business rules and allowability of costs against government contract.
- Responsible for maintaining Standard Based Management System (SBMS) lab wide requirements for topics pertaining to this position.
- Maintain and provide metrics reporting for the Accounting Operations division.
- Identify and implement process improvements and efficiency opportunities.
- Develop and present training to lab-wide staff on the business rules and process for conference and controlled business expense.
- Ensure related policies and procedures are reviewed and maintained as current.
- Serves as the Subject Matter Expert for internal policies related to controlled business expenses.
- Collaborate and work closely with Conference and Payment Services Groups.
- Prepare reconciliations and audit functions as assigned for both internal and external auditors.
- Prepare and assist with yearend requirements related to conference audit and CBE tasks.
- Participate or complete special projects as assigned.

Basic Qualifications:
- A BS degree in Accounting or a business related field.
- A minimum of 5 years of experience with general accounting functions or audit functions.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability and willingness to responsibly maintain work requirements and meet stringent deadlines daily, applying self-initiative and capability for working in an autonomous and independent manner with minimum direction.
- Excellent attention to detail and strong analytical and problem-solving skills are essential.
- Proficiency in applying accounting principles, policies, and procedures.
- Position requires superior human relations skills that promote effective and positive interactions with a diverse group of others, both internal and external to company.
- Candidate should have the ability to become familiar with the ORNL accounting system and external business applications to proficiently perform responsible tasks.
- Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.
- Ability to function well in a fast-paced business environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.
- Experience with SAP or other similar financial systems.
