Job Summary:

With Barnard’s longstanding commitment to diversity and equity, the Faculty Diversity and Development (FDD) Committee and Barnard College, Columbia University in New York City, seeks three, full-time Early-Career Faculty Fellows to spend two years (beginning July 2025) contributing to, and gaining from, the rich community of research, teaching and praxis of Morningside Heights, where Barnard College is located. The Barnard Early-Career Faculty Fellow program is a two-year residential fellowship welcoming of early-career scholars from social backgrounds under-represented in academia. The fellowship is designed to help expand the number of under-represented scholars who are hired into tenure-track positions by providing them with the experience, skills, and accomplishments necessary to succeed in the highly competitive application process.

Job Description:

This complement of extraordinary early-career scholars will play an active role in a vibrant scholarly community and fully participate in the life of their academic home at the college. Faculty Fellows teach two undergraduate courses (or their equivalent) relevant to their scholarly interests and experience, conduct research and scholarship in the candidate’s discipline, and receive mentoring and professional development support from the department/program, college, and university. departmental mentoring and College-wide professional development support. This is a two-year position beginning on July 1, 2025, with teaching responsibilities during the standard academic year from September through May.

Africana Studies

Africana Studies seeks a Barnard Faculty Fellow in parallel with the Zora Neale Hurston Centennial and recognition of 100 Years of Black Students at Barnard (2025-2028).  

In recognition of Hurston’s extraordinary career and legacy, the Africana Studies Department seeks an early-career scholar whose research and teaching reflect a commitment to Africa and/or the African diaspora, and whose approach draws from diverse methodologies including (but not limited to) Anthropology, Ethnomusicology, Dance, History, Literature, Film, Geography, Environmental Studies, Humanities, Caribbean Studies, and Latin American Studies. While we have a particular interest in candidates with a focus on Latin America and/or the Caribbean region, we are open to all areas of Africa and the African diaspora. Expertise in archival research would also be welcome.

Africana Studies faculty have a strong track record of mentoring graduate students and early career faculty both informally and formally through ACLS, the Ford Foundation, the Mellon Foundation, The Race Before Race Mentoring Network. We are both experienced and excited at the prospect of sharing our knowledge about how to be strategic and wise in crafting an interdisciplinary career.  Tailoring to the specific needs of the candidate, our faculty would provide manuscript workshops, job market preparation (i.e., reading cover letters and research/teaching statements; hosting practice job talks), teaching in the Spanish and Latin American Cultures (SLAC) environment, syllabus development and review, teaching evaluation and class visitation, as well as feedback on grant applications.
