Role Overview:

New York Life is seeking an experienced and forward-thinking Medical Director with expertise in innovation and medical informatics to join our Underwriting Innovation team. This role is ideal for a medical professional who has successfully bridged the gap between medicine, technology, and data — and is passionate about using informatics to drive innovation in mortality and morbidity risk assessment, digital underwriting, and operational efficiency.

The ideal candidate will have a strong foundation in clinical practice and a proven track record applying informatics principles to improve decision-making, data integration, or patient and population health outcomes. As part of a collaborative team, you will guide initiatives related to Artificial Intelligence (AI), predictive models, underwriting rules, electronic health record (EHR) utilization, clinical viewers, data governance, and workflow optimization across the underwriting process.

You will also play a critical role in supporting underwriting teams, developing and maintaining medical guidelines, and collaborating with cross-functional partners including data science, actuarial, technology, and product.

This reports to our head of Underwriting Innovation for primary responsibilities and has a secondary (dotted) line of reporting to our Chief Medical Director.

What You’ll Do:

· Apply clinical and informatics expertise to support accurate, technology-enabled risk assessment of complex medical cases including the use of automations tools such as underwriting rules, AI and predictive models.

· Serve as a liaison between medical, technology, analytics and data science teams to design and implement informatics solutions that improve underwriting workflows and decision-making.

· Lead or support initiatives involving clinical data standardization, natural language processing (NLP), and EHR data ingestion and interpretation.

· Evaluate external digital health trends and tools (e.g., wearables, digital biomarkers, telehealth data) for their potential integration into risk selection and assessment.

· Review medical records, lab data, and diagnostic testing (including ECGs), providing consultative guidance to the underwriting team.

· Mentor underwriters and junior team members on clinical concepts and emerging informatics practices.

· Contribute to the development and refinement of evidence-based medical underwriting guidelines.

· Collaborate with underwriters to integrate clinical insights with digital data sources (e.g., EHRs, structured health data, and patient-reported outcomes).

What You’ll Bring:

· Medical degree (MD/DO or equivalent) required; MPH, MS in Medical Informatics, or equivalent training in health data science, clinical informatics, or digital health preferred. Advanced medical practitioners including Physician Assistants and/or Nurse Practitioners with strong experience in Health Informatics will also be considered.

· Minimum of 3 years clinical experience

· Prior experience in life insurance, risk assessment, or the financial services sector is highly desirable.

· Candidates should demonstrate experience with medical informatics or clinical innovation including implementing clinical decision support tools, health IT systems, or digital health platforms.

· Strong understanding of EHR systems, healthcare terminology and interoperability standards (e.g., HL7, FHIR, ICD, CPT, LOINC, and SNOMED CT), and experience with one or more Electronic Health Record systems.

· Exceptional communication skills and ability to collaborate across multidisciplinary teams. · Licensed to practice medicine in at least one U.S. state.

· Board certification in Internal Medicine or Family Medicine preferred, though not required.

· Board certification or eligibility for Board certification in Insurance medicine is highly desirable.
