This role is part of the Blue Origin Engines business unit, where our focus is the design, development, manufacturing, and testing of engines and propulsion systems. As part of a small, passionate and accomplished team of experts, you will play a key role in developing and carrying out custom materials testing in support of Blue’s Engines programs. The position will involve developing and building custom material test equipment and fixtures, running mechanical and environmental tests, and establishing best practices for rapid materials development. This position will directly impact the history of space exploration and will require your dedicated commitment and detailed attention towards safe and repeatable spaceflight.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Develop novel testing capabilities for mechanical and environmental materials tests (such as high-temperature mechanical testing, oxidation/corrosion testing, etc.)
  • Perform metallurgical and quality analysis per industry standards (metallography, mechanical testing, non-destructive evaluation)
  • Develop standard methods, training material, and related documentation for laboratory and development processes 
  • Maintain development equipment and facilities including test equipment, furnaces, welding equipment etc.
  • Identify new equipment to expand development capability as needs arise
  • Safely work with hazardous systems containing chemicals, elevated and cryogenic temperatures, and/or high pressure

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • At least 5 years of experience working in material test laboratories, R&D materials/ process development, or comparable environment. 
  • Experience using mechanical testing load frames (tension, compression, flexure, fatigue, creep etc.) 
  • Experience with basic hand tools and precision measurement devices (calipers, micrometers, etc.) 
  • Experience with engineering laboratory skills: weights and measures, chemical hygiene, materials safety planning, personal protective equipment, contamination control, workload organization and planning 
  • Extremely customer focused, critical thinker with strong verbal and written communication skills 
  • Ability to lift 50lbs and comfortable working at heights (work stands, ladders, lifts) and/or in confined spaces. 
  • Ability to work with and around chemicals and other hazardous materials 
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team 
  • Work off-shift, extended hours overtime, and weekends if/when necessary 
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with ASTM E8, E9, E21, E139, D638, ASTM E466/E606 and other common aerospace mechanical testing standards 
  • Experience with MTS and/or Instron operating systems 
  • Experience with processes such as welding, heat treatment, laser cutting/drilling, coatings, rolling etc.
  • Understanding of typical aerospace testing and quality processes 
  • Understanding of the types of materials and processes used to fabricate aerospace components
  • Experience in CAD modeling
  • Experience with 3D printing 


 

Base Pay Range for:

WA applicants is $36.60 - $51.23
