The USF Department of Surgery, in collaboration with Tampa General Hospital’s Muma Children’s Hospital, is dedicated to delivering unparalleled pediatric surgical care while fostering academic excellence and clinical innovation. This partnership integrates the resources and expertise of two leading institutions, creating a robust environment for advanced pediatric care, cutting-edge research, and comprehensive surgical education. Together, we are committed to enhancing surgery residency training, driving continuous quality improvement, and maintaining the highest standards of patient care. We are seeking an accomplished and visionary leader to join us as Chief of Pediatric General Surgery, where you will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of pediatric surgical care through strategic leadership, multidisciplinary collaboration, and clinical excellence.

This pivotal role is ideal for a dynamic, board-certified pediatric surgeon with a strong record in clinical excellence, research, and education. The Chief will provide strategic leadership, oversee program development, and drive multidisciplinary collaborations to enhance patient care, education, and research within our vibrant academic medical center. Preference will be given to candidates with specialized training or significant experience in pediatric trauma management.

10% Leadership & Administration:

Provide both clinical and administrative leadership for the pediatric general surgery program, guiding strategic planning and fostering a culture of collaboration and accountability.

Oversee budget planning, resource allocation, and operational efficiency to meet financial and quality targets.

Lead recruitment, training, and professional development initiatives for faculty, staff, and residents, mentoring emerging leaders in pediatric surgery.

Represent the department on hospital committees, academic councils, and community engagements, advocating for the advancement of pediatric surgical services.

80% Clinical Excellence & Patient Care:

Develop and implement clinical protocols and care pathways that adhere to best practices in pediatric surgical care, ensuring safety and consistency across the program.

Establish performance metrics to monitor clinical outcomes and patient satisfaction, spearheading continuous quality improvement initiatives.

Collaborate closely with interdisciplinary teams—including pediatric trauma, emergency, and critical care specialists—to optimize surgical outcomes and streamline patient management.

3% Teaching Duties:

Promote mentorship and professional development programs that support the career growth of junior faculty and trainees.

Must have recognized skills in the education of residents and medical students and will be expected to actively participate in the Department's residency training and educational programs and well versed in the educational experience of medical students, residents, and clinical fellows.

3% Research:

Cultivate a research environment that promotes innovative clinical studies, quality improvement projects, and translational research initiatives.

Secure external funding and grants to support cutting-edge research, enhancing USF Health’s reputation as a leader in pediatric surgery.

Oversee the design and delivery of robust educational programs for residents, fellows, and medical students, emphasizing hands-on experience and research integration.

4% Additional Responsibilities:

Serve as a key liaison between USF Health, Morsani College of Medicine, and TGH hospitals, ensuring alignment of clinical, educational, and research objectives.

Advocate for improvements in pediatric surgical services at local, regional, and national forums, contributing to policy development and best practice standards.

Analyze performance data and patient outcomes to drive quality improvement initiatives and enhance service delivery across the department.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF POSITION:

Responsible to a Chair or other appropriate higher-level administrator of a State university.

Responsible for teaching, research, service, and related administrative activities.

Responsible for academic advising and related activities.

May represent the university, college/school, or department.

MINIMUM:

· Doctoral/Medical degree from an accredited institution or the highest degree appropriate in the field of specialization with a demonstrated record of achievement in teaching, academic research, and service. Must meet university criteria for appointment to the rank of Associate, or Full Professor. For Associate or Full Professor- Normally will have produced creative work, professional writing or research in referred and other professional journals and be a recognized authority in the field of specialization.
