Who We Are
The Laboratory of Atomic and Solid State Physics is under the umbrella of the Research Division and is one of two research arms of the Physics Department. LASSP has 30+ faculty, 18 administrative & technical staff, 50-60 graduate students, and 50+ other academic professionals (research associates, postdocs, visitors). LASSP is also the administrative home of the Kavli Institute at Cornell for Nanoscale Science (KIC) and the Cornell NEXT Nano Initiative, which are both interdisciplinary, cross-university, and outward-facing programs. The combined annual operating budget for LASSP & KIC is approximately $15 million, of which about $11 million is grant- and contract- related.

The Administrative Supervisor reports directly to the Associate Director and is an integral administrator and front-line representative of LASSP to all faculty, staff, student, and outside constituents. This person partners with the Associate Director to ensure smooth day-to-day operations of the Lab, and partners closely with the finance specialist to ensure complete and accurate accounting and financial planning in support of department activities.
The Administrative Supervisor is the team leader for administrative functions in LASSP, providing supervision and guidance to the LASSP Administrative Assistant, and is responsible for directing and managing many non-academic operations for the lab. Responsibilities include training, supervising, and directing other administrative office workers, and working in close collaboration with the entire administrative team in LASSP. The Administrative Supervisor, in concert with the Associate Director, is responsible for the business functions of the lab, including space management, facilities inventory, capital assets management, event planning and coordination, faculty support projects, website updates, travel, and basic finances. The position also assists with documenting, evaluating, and updating/improving processes and procedures to improve efficiency, clarity, and communication throughout the lab.
Additionally, the Administrative Supervisor works closely with the Sr. Finance Specialist to ensure that financial transactions and account management activities are supported.
In addition, this person is as a member of both the “onboarding” and “special events” work groups and serves on other committees as appropriate. This person must have the ability to interact with individuals at all levels, and to remain flexible, inclusive, respectful, resourceful, and responsive in a dynamic environment.
