Point Loma Nazarene University, a faith-based institution affiliated with the Church of the Nazarene, invites applications for a tenure track program director position for literacy and reading at the assistant or associate rank beginning in the Fall of 2025. Qualified applicants should have a terminal degree in early literacy or a related field. The successful candidate will demonstrate a commitment to excellent teaching at the graduate level in a Christian context, will display a strong potential for applied scholarship and service to the School of Education disciplines, and will embrace the mission of Point Loma Nazarene University. Teaching responsibilities will be across the curriculum in higher education leadership coursework and may include instructional methodology, action research, and other educationally related content.
The School of Education is comprised of 13 faculty members with a strong commitment to high quality teaching, service, and applied scholarship. There are approximately 1100 candidates working toward a credential or masters’ degree that are drawn to the School of Education for its commitment to educating students who are empowered, equipped, and transformed to work in 21st century educational settings.

Salary: 

PLNU pays its faculty using a payscale based on experience and academic rank.  Faculty salaries using this scale for a 2-semester appointment range from $73,245 to $126,825. The actual salary will be based on the experience, rank, and appointment term of the candidate selected to fill this position.

Responsibilities

  • Provide program direction and leadership for all reading and literacy programs.  Program director duties include at least (3) days per week on campus to support staff and work closely with the SOE leadership to build a strong online presence in the teacher education and advanced programs.  Additional duties may include recruitment and enrollment efforts, course development, and curricular alignment.

  • Teach graduate courses that include courses in early reading and literacy.

  • Invest in candidates outside of the classroom through academic advising and supervision 

  • Participate in program and institutional activities and governance and contribute to the culture and strength of the School of Education. 

  • Serve on faculty committees and perform other normal faculty duties 

  • Conduct scholarly research 

  • Engage in off-campus community service

Qualifications

  • Doctoral degree in Reading Literacy or related field is preferred; experience in working with or teaching young children is required.

  • Evidence of Christian commitment and active church involvement. 

  • Thorough commitment to the concept of Christian graduate education. Desire to work in an evangelical institution in the Wesleyan tradition. 

  • Supportive of the religious and educational goals of the university and its sponsoring denomination. 

  • Potential for outstanding teaching and research.
