Meet the Team: 

Member of the Fleet Operations Team this person oversees Fleet Operations Test Safety and Auditing programs for safe testing and operation of autonomous Class 8 trucks and trailers across multiple sites. Leads the Fleet Test Safety Program, serves as the On-Road Test Safety Officer, manages the Fleet Operations audit process for the IFTD and Safety Conductor Training Programs and the supports the operations-portion of the IERP process. 

What you'll do

  • Leads the Autonomous Vehicle Test Safety Program that focuses on the Closed Course and On-Road Test safety program and improvement initiatives to ensure the safe testing of Automated Driving System (ADS)-equipped vehicles
  • Collaborates on all safety topics with Torc Fleet Operations, Engineering, Safety & Regulatory, Daimler, Communications, and Legal teams as well as relevant stakeholders, industry regulators and Federal & State Autonomous Vehicle Regulations
  • Develops, implements, and maintains safety engineering initiatives to analyze and assess safety, reliability, sustainability, and quality aspects of the design, development, test, manufacturing, and operational phases of Autonomous Vehicle Programs and Projects
  • Evaluates and manages the financial needs of the test safety organization and developing budget strategies to increase the overall technical and safety efficiencies and effectiveness
  • Implements compliance with accepted requirements and standards including those associated with Torc's Quality Management System and US Safety processes
  • In partnership with People Operations, supervisory responsibilities include leading continuous goal setting, career pathing and professional development, tracking competencies, employee team building and training, performance management, scheduling and assigning work, resource management and controlling expenses, and enforces systems, policies, and procedures. Proactively manages coaching, employee relations, and conflict while representing Torc’s core values.
  • Identify hiring needs, partner with People Operations and Talent Acquisition, and assist in the recruiting, screening, interviewing, selection, hiring and new hire onboarding processes for talent across multidisciplinary teams. Recommends salary increases, promotions, transfers, demotions, or terminations. Accomplishes department objectives by supervising staff and organizing and monitoring work processes with the highest degree of quality and safety

What you’ll need to Succeed: 

  • A Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Physical Science, Mathematics, Life Sciences, Computer Science, or other related degree. Master’s Degree in related field of study preferred
  • 15+ years’ experience providing leadership to an organization and directly managing multidisciplined engineering teams responsible for complex operational test and transportation/flight operations-related projects and systems
  • Experience effectively leading an organization responsible for safety and quality assurance processes and procedures for complex development systems, including workforce and budgets.
  • Experience with engineering safety and quality for controls associated with complex vehicle/aircraft control systems, robotics and autonomous vehicle equipment, applying development standards for the development lifecycle, and coaching developers on processes to apply during all phases from concept to production
  • Proven track record of leading a safety or similar program through operational test and evaluation (OT&E)
  • Demonstrated experience managing internal compliance programs and operational safety
  • Demonstrated experience leading organizations that provide technical support for incident and accident investigations
  • Travel up to 25% to Blacksburg VA, Austin, TX, and Albuquerque, NM locations
