JOB SUMMARY

Reporting to the Director of Comprehensive Advising, the Associate Director of Comprehensive Advising provides leadership and oversight of comprehensive advising processes and procedures for international students and scholars at Northeastern University’s Boston campus. 

The Associate Director provides support and oversight for all SEVIS (Student and Exchange Visitor Information System) compliance functions and serves as a Designated School Official (DSO) and Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO). Maintains full regulatory oversight leading to a precise schedule of SEVIS reportable events and registrations as required by current immigration regulations; Manages comprehensive range of international student and scholar advising functions and makes referrals to relevant campus support as required; Supports key enrollment management initiatives related to international students; Ensures the delivery of holistic advising, support, and services aimed at contributing to the integration, retention, and overall achievements of international students and scholars; Collaborates with OGS managers and campus stakeholders to develop, design, and implement programs and infrastructures needed to support and enrich the international student and scholar experience; Contributes to the planning and implementation of international student orientation. Performs other duties as assigned. 

The Associate Director supervises an advising team, providing direction, training, and workflow management, connecting the team seamlessly to other OGS teams and/or locations in the U.S. as needed. 

Job Duties:

International Student Services: 

  • Advise students and scholars on F/J status on all aspects of compliance with relevant regulations throughout their lifecycle at Northeastern. 
  • In collaboration with the Director of Comprehensive Advising, oversee F-1 student processes and procedures. 
  • Resolve issues regarding maintenance of valid nonimmigrant status and retaining eligibility for non-immigrant benefits. Lead or participate in the resolution of complex immigration cases. 
  • Monitor international students’ enrollment status and compliance with federal regulations and institutional policies. 
  • Maintain knowledge and operational expertise of SEVIS functions and upgrades. Research and understand the Code of Federal Regulations as they apply to international student/scholar services. 
  • Provide excellent customer service. Participate in advising hours and respond to email inquiries in a timely manner.   
  • Serve within the DSO on-call rotation 

Leadership:

  • Supervise a team of OGS staff, providing training, coaching, and development.  
  • Serve as an OGS representative/liaison to campus stakeholders.  
  • Develop and lead training for campus partners on relevant topics related to international students and scholars. 
  • Collaborate with OGS managers, advisors and staff to develop, design, and implement programs and infrastructures needed to support and enrich the international student and scholar experience at Northeastern.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Five to eight years of formal experience in international student/scholar services as DSO/ARO in a higher education setting.
  • Exceptional level of organizational skills, attention to detail, analytical capabilities, and a positive approach to problem-solving.
  • Demonstrated experience supervising professional staff.
  • Exceptional intercultural, interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with flexibility, creativity, and good humor. 
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident to serve as DSO/ARO.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in international education, or a related field.
  • A proven ability to work effectively with students and stakeholders.
  • Fluency in multiple languages.
  • Experience living abroad.  
  • Strong computer skills in Sunapsis, Banner, etc.
