Job Summary The Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) is responsible for preparing and maintaining the sterile field, surgical instruments, and supplies necessary for operative procedures. The CST anticipates the needs of the surgical team, assists the surgeon throughout all phases of the procedure, and ensures a safe, efficient, and sterile environment. Additional responsibilities include pre- and post-operative room cleaning and equipment preparation. Job Qualifications Education & Training: Licenses / Certifications: Graduate of an accredited surgical technology program (CAAHEP or ABHES preferred). Current certification as a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) through NBSTSA required.   BLS required Experience: Key Skills: 1-3 years of Surgical Technologist experience in a fast paced multi-specialty hospital or surgery center is required. Thorough knowledge of surgical instruments, procedures, and sterile technique.   Ability to multi-task in a fast paced environment   Strong attention to detail and organizational skills   Excellent communication and teamwork skills   Ability to anticipate the needs of the surgeon, assistants, and respond quickly Primary Duties and Responsibilities (listed in order of importance) # Description 1 Prepare sterile supplies and instruments using sterile technique. Set up the sterile field and ensure surgical equipment is functioning properly.  2 Assist in positioning and prepping patients as needed for surgery. 3 Anticipate the needs of the surgical team based on knowledge of human anatomy and pathophysiology and how they relate to the surgical patient and procedure. 4 Pass supplies, equipment, and instruments during procedures. Assist with suction, suture preparation, irrigation, medication transfer (not administration), specimen handling, and retraction. 5 Apply electrocautery to clamps on bleeders, connect drains to suction apparatus, and apply dressings to closed wounds. Assist in sponge, needle, and instrument counts with the circulating RN before, during, and after the procedure. 6 Perform intraoperative activation of power equipment under the authority of the physician. 7 Clean and prepare instruments for sterilization.
