Job Summary

EMT is responsible to the Crew Chief on duty, then the emergency room nurse coordinator while on duty in the hospital. Functioning in a pre-hospital setting, the EMT is responsible to follow physician orders regarding care of the patient(s). The EMT is responsible on a shift to shift and on-call basis for the pre-hospital and general patient care provided under the guidelines of hospital policy. The areas of responsibility are divided into four functional areas:

1. Pre-hospital patient care, transport, and documentation.
2. Administrative assignments
3. Educational/Developmental/Licensure responsibilities.

Duties and Responsibilities

PRE-HOSPTIAL PATIENT CARE, DOCUMENTATION, AND TRANSPORT

• Responds via ambulance in a safe, expedient, and efficient manner to the scene or location of injured and/or sick patient(s).
• Assists other crew members in patient(s) care after evaluating the scene, by assessing the needs of individual patients, and treating the patient(s) appropriately.
• Provides direct patient care in accordance with the laws governing Idaho EMT’s, with the standards set by the Idaho Emergency Medical Services Bureau, Minidoka Memorial Hospital Medical Control Physicians and Minidoka Memorial Hospital Policies and Procedures manual.
• Assures that medical treatment provided is properly implemented, evaluated and documented.
• Adheres to the criteria for use of written standing orders as set up by the Medical Control Physician of Minidoka Memorial Hospital.
• Assures that the proper communication, via two-way radio or cell phone, is carried out with the Emergency Room Physician, Emergency Department, State Communication Center, other hospitals, law enforcement agencies and/or other appropriate public service agencies.
• Assures that the ambulance is driven in a safe manner and in accordance with the laws governing the operation of Emergency Vehicles in the State of Idaho and the Emergency Driving Standards in the policy and procedures manual.
• Actively engage in quality improvement activities.
• Assures that the ambulances are stocked, cleaned, and ready for use at all times.

ADMINISTRATIVE ASSIGNMENTS

• Responsible to follow personnel and staffing policies as they relate to him/her.
• Responsible to participate in evaluations pertinent to Quality Assurance.
• Responsible to provide feedback to the shift supervisor on needs of the service and current program.
• Responsible to document the use of supplies and equipment for each ambulance call.
• Completes other job related duties as necessary and/or other assigned duties per director request.
• Maintains a safe environment for patients, bystanders, visitors, and other personnel.
• Know and understands specific responsibilities of him/her and staff during a disaster call code as per Minidoka Memorial Hospital policy.
• Demonstrates professional and ethical conduct as established by Minidoka Memorial Hospital policy and the Idaho EMS Bureau standards and ethics for the Emergency Medical Technicians.
• Actively engage in quality improvement activities.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

INTRA-HOSPITAL RESPONSIBILITIES, TRANSPORT AND OTHER DUTIES.

• Responds to calls on the 911 pager is first priority.
• Make sure that ambulance is stocked and maintained.
• Completes job-related duties assigned by the department supervisor.
• Assist emergency room staff in accordance with emergency department policies and scope of practice.
• Intra-facility transports to include Countryside Care and Rehabilitation. 
• Assigned duties may be subject to change. All revisions will be documented in Minidoka Memorial Hospital policy and procedure manuals and copies given to all EMT personnel.
• Required to be in ambulance headquarters or within the emergency room when on duty. If duty assignment requires being outside of the hospital area, alert appropriate personnel of that location.
• Participates as a member of the code team.
• Performs above and other related duties.
• Covers the Patient Safety Attendant (PSA) program in ED when called in. 

Requirements

Minimum Requirements

• Certified as an EMT 2011 and provides that certification, at the time of hire, to the Director of Ambulance.
• Required to meet the minimum continuing education hours for state licensure, and perform the annual and semi-annual skills as required by Idaho EMS Bureau.
• Required to pass Minidoka Memorial Hospital physical and agility test.
• Knowledgeable in the pre-hospital setting and care entities involved.
• Has a current Idaho driver’s license and is in good standing with the State of Idaho.
