Job Description
Position Purpose:
Perform operations and maintenance activities at the water and wastewater treatment facilities in accordance with established procedures. Perform maintenance activities on water distribution and wastewater collection systems, including all related components and appurtenances. Employee is subject to varied work conditions in and outdoors, including noise, fumes, hazardous materials and inclement weather.
Primary Duties/Responsibilities:
- Perform laboratory, biosolids management, water and wastewater treatment process operations, as assigned, in accordance with established procedures and guidelines.
- Ability to use computers for data entry, record keeping, and word processing.
- Perform manual labor as required to assist in the maintenance and repair of water distribution and sewer collection lines, including all related components and appurtenances.
- Account for all assigned materials, tools and equipment; perform specific maintenance and inspections of the same in accordance with established procedures; initiate procurement of materials and supplies as required to perform general and specific job responsibilities.
- Perform building and grounds maintenance as assigned.
- Perform the operator and/or technician job related duties responsible for the laboratory, biosolids management, wastewater and water operations of work activities by methods deemed appropriate when assigned to those respective areas. Keep the Operations Superintendent and Project Manager advised of potential operational problems; cooperate and coordinate work activities as necessary with other personnel.
- Respond to emergency call-outs after regular working hours when required.
- Perform other work activities related to specific job responsibilities listed above; operate motorized vehicles and equipment.
Qualifications
Education/Experience/Background:
- High School Diploma/GED is required.
- Minimum 1-year experience in operations and maintenance of water or wastewater treatment plants, preferred.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
- Proven skills in the operations of water or wastewater treatment plants, preferred.
- Ability to perform manual labor and use shovels, picks and similar hand tools and equipment used in manual labor operations.
- Working skills in the plumbing and/or mechanicals trades.
- Ability to climb and work on high structures.
- Ability to deal effectively with the public.
- Ability to operate heavy equipment such as front loaders, back hoe and tandem axle dump trucks.
- Ability to understand complaints and deal with the public in a courteous fashion.
- Ability to hear and communicate on the telephone, two-way radio, and in person.
- Ability to read and comprehend maps and blueprints.
- Ability to view and comprehend operations and maintenance reports and documents.
- Ability to perform complex mathematical calculations and solve geometric equations.
- Ability to speak and understand the English language.
Required Certification/Licenses/Training:
- Class B water and/or Class B wastewater Operators license as issued by the PA-DEP, preferred.
- Completion of 60 hours PA DEP-approved wastewater and water operator training, preferred.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to perform lifting of objects weighing as much as 100 lbs.
- Ability to remain on one’s feet while working for periods as long as 5 hours.
- Ability to perform manual labor.
- Ability to climb and descend from stairs and ladders as high as 100 feet.
- Ability to perform work on elevated structures and in confined spaces.
- Ability to bend, reach, and squat to perform operations and maintenance tasks.
- Ability to perform physical functions that require the full use of both hands and feet.
