LHIP Internship: Interpretation Intern (PLC) - ONSITE - César E. Chávez National Monument

The Latino Heritage Internship Program (LHIP) seeks to engage undergraduates and recent graduates ages 18 - 30, and up to 35 for veterans, for this unmatched leadership training program that is focused in the cultural and natural resource management. You must be (additional requirement):

• You must be a U.S. citizen or legal resident.
• A drivers license is required for this position.

Position Description: 

Researching, developing, and presenting interpretive talks/programs on the historical, cultural, and natural resources of the park; assisting with the development of park brochures; creating social media content or other educational materials covering one or more historical/environmental justice topics; assisting with curating and cataloging the park’s natural and cultural resources; and developing natural or cultural resource educational curriculum and activities.

Goals:
To increase capacity to meet the demand from local communities for on-site educational and interpretive programming. The purpose of the intern is to invest in youth by providing opportunities for networking and skill-building while supplementing the park ranger workforce by performing duties designed to:

• Facilitate visitor understanding of park resources.

• Facilitate visitor enjoyment of the park and its resources.

• Facilitate and encourage visitor behavior consistent with resource protection and gain friendly compliance with the laws and rules for the safe use of the park.

• Encourage visitors to develop a sense of stewardship for park resources.

Park Needs:
Our park currently has only one NPS employee in our Interpretation and Education division. We rely heavily on Hispanic Access Foundation interns, but their contracts will end in the next few months, leaving us with very little capacity again.

Duties will include:

• Conducting basic research of topics for the purpose of providing interpretive programs, both orally and/or in writing.

• Presenting formal and informal programs, including orientation talks, educational programs, conducted walks, and demonstrations.

• Informing visitors about park facilities and resources.

• Serving as a frontline park representative at the Visitor Center desk, greeting visitors.

• Learning about park resources on the job.

• Providing assistance with one-time or annual celebrations related to the programs and themes of the park and assisting with the operations of special events.

• Operating a variety of audiovisual and other equipment used in connection with interpretive material.

• Scheduling field trips, gathering routine information for reports, and compiling statistical data.

• Assisting with museum collection management.

Responsibilities:

• The intern would be responsible for creating and delivering interpretive and educational programming after training.

• Public speaking skills.

• Friendly, outgoing personality.

• Comfortable with computers.

• Reliable and team-oriented.

Qualifications:

• Qualified applicants will have completed some higher education coursework related to the job functions in the position description.

• Strong oral and written communication skills.

• Public speaking experience.

• Bilingual (Spanish) strongly preferred.

• Strong organizational and time management skills.

• Innovative and self-starter.

• Experience working in a collaborative team environment.
