Job Description Summary

As a Welder at GE Aerospace Research you will preform manual metal arc welding, gas welding. brazing, cutting, burning. Spray metallizing, MIG and TIG welding in all positions.

Job Description

  • Secure job assignment and partial instructions for diverse work using conventional facilities and materials.
  • Interpret sequence of operations, use tools, facilities and materials.
  • Follow sequence of operations
  • Working from drawings, sketches, written and verbal instructions, etc., perform manual metal arc, carbon
  • arc, gas welding, MIG, TIG, brazing, gas cutting and burning as required in the installation, maintenance
  • and repair of high-pressure systems, generally determining methods and procedures.
  • Work from ladders, high scaffolds, pipe trestles, etc., climbing and working at any required height.
  • Work in manholes and closed steam tunnels, and outdoors in excavations under the most severe weather conditions. Work inside combustion test stands and exhaust stacks, sometimes working in elevated temperatures.
  • Operations also include cutting, beveling and welding cast iron pipe, stainless steel, and carbon above and below ground level, thawing frozen pipes, welding hangers, supports, pipe guides, etc.
  • Competent use of all shop equipment (iron worker, drills, saws, acetylene torch plasma arc, AC & DC welders, SMAW, GTAW, GMAW, hand and layout tools, operate forklifts, overhead cranes).
  • Weld in all positions and close quarters as required on fuel, gas, air, steam, water, etc. lines and pipes.
  • Remove slag and weld splatter, fill craters and gage weld size.
  • Observe weld deposits carefully, clean and inspect visually for defects or trapped slag before next pass is applied; repair as necessary.
  • Stow away tools and equipment.
  • Perform all position welding to very close requirements on combustion liners, transition pieces, nozzles, test stands, pressure vessels, variety of pipe lines, etc.
  • Quality may be checked visually by weld gauges, red dye penetrant, magna flux, X-ray, etc.
  • Defective work may not be readily apparent.
  • Keep facilities, material and work area orderly exercising care in their use, maintaining general housekeeping practices and conforming to all safety and quality requirements.

Required Qualifications:

  • Must be 18 years or older.

  • High School Diploma/GED with Journeyman's card  OR High School Diploma/GED with Welding School training school and 5 years experience (Verifiable)OR High School Diploma/GED with Official Journeyman welder card  (or certified/licensed welder)
  • Skilled in various welding processes such as GTAW, GMAW, and SMAW, and may work with different metals including steel, stainless steel, and aluminum.
  • Must certify within 8 hours per base material group as required and periodic certification thereafter.
  • Must be able to pass welding skills demonstration, written test and hands-on benching test.
  • Ability and willingness to work off shifts and weekends.
  • Ability, with or without accommodation, to lift/push/pull at least 50 pounds.
  • Must pass physical, background, and drug screens.
  • Ability and willingness to wear personal protective equipment, for example safety glasses, gloves, ear plugs, and safety shoes
  • Ability and willingness to take a pre-employment test and submit to technical interview.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Able to read blueprints.
  • Experience with fluorescent dye penetrant.
  • Previous held weld certification(s) in: corrosive resistant and heat resistant ferrous alloys, nickel base alloys, cobalt, base alloys, aluminum alloys, and titanium alloys
  • A.S.M.E. Boiler Code Welding certification.
