About the role
To direct and manage General Accounting branches of the Comptroller department, under the leadership of the VP Accounting Operations. Ensure internal controls and accounting operations policies/procedures are followed to ensure accounting operations, transactions, and reporting are properly classified, recorded, reconciled, and reported. Direct report to VP Accounting Operations.
- Under the leadership of the Vice President Accounting Operations, assume responsibility/accountability for the leadership, direction, and management of various Comptroller branches, e.g., General Accounting, Funds Accounting, and Financial Accounting branches
- Plan, direct, and lead the strategic recommendations of senior management regarding the branch's operations and direction, results, and compliance with organizational objectives and regulatory matters
- Implement branch strategies and goals, objectives, policies, and operating procedures; monitor and evaluate program effectiveness; advise senior management of issues and implement improvements
- Determine and review gaps in branch performance, establish branch performance metrics, and ensure appropriate improvements are initiated and managed
- Manage the implementation and review of internal controls to ensure financial transactions are properly classified, recorded, reconciled and reported
- Provide positive leadership to the branches through teaching, training, employee engagement, succession planning, and mentorship programs
- Oversee the accounting of cash at branches, ATMs, Vaults, deposits in transit and banks
- Develop and recommend new programs, procedures and automated solutions for streamlining and improving General, Funds, and Financial accounting methods and report production
- Evaluate financial and technical impact of new products and services, and manage collaboration with project/change management teams
- Drive branch change and learning by embracing new, flexible, and agile approaches to improve business performance and efficiency
- Direct implementation of new procedures and automated processes related to financial and funds accounting, and maintenance of accurate accounting records (General Ledger)
- Collaborate with systems personnel to coordinate functional requirements to ensure the maintenance of complete and current documentation of the general ledger processes and system interfaces
- Direct the maintenance of the general ledger system and ensure compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
- Manage projects and external vendors involved in Accounting operations activities, including development of requirements, review of proposals, and selection in accordance with Navy Federal's procurement policies and procedures
- Maintain awareness of Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) developments, anticipate effect on Navy Federal accounting procedures and recommend new/revised internal practices and systems
- Participate in financial and investor reporting audits; interact with internal and external auditors, and NCUA examiners
- Perform other duties as assigned
- Significant experience in financial accounting, financial management, and internal/external reporting for a financial organization
- Advanced knowledge of federal and state laws pertaining to the management of financial assets and financial reporting requirements, including Statements of Financial Accounting Standards (SFAS)
- FASB, GAAP, etc.
- Advanced knowledge of financial services, reconciliation and payments, Automated Clearing House and Check Processing
- Experience in demonstrating thought-leadership, initiative taking, decision-making and creativity in solving business problems
- Experience in implementing strategic initiatives to support organizational objectives
- Experience with automated systems to include payment, remittance processing and imaging systems
- Ability to negotiate, persuade, guide/direct team members and work in a collaborative environment across departmental lines
- Significant experience demonstrating thought-leadership, initiative-taking, decision-making and creativity solving business problems
- Experience in leading, directing and controlling a multi-function corporate/institutional operation and demonstrated skill in leading others to achieve goals
- Effective skill leading with diplomacy and tact while maintaining appropriate assertiveness and persistence
- Advanced analytical/quantitative, reconciliation and deductive reasoning skills
- Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Finance, Accounting or Economics, or a related field or the equivalent combination of experience, education and training
