About the role

Description

The Religion department at Reed College invites applications for a full-time, Assistant Professor tenure track appointment in Buddhist Studies/East Asia to commence August, 2027. While sub-fields are open and our department supports interdisciplinarity, we are especially interested in scholars trained explicitly in the theories and methods of religious studies whose research or teaching might engage in one or more especially desired domains: 1) environmental humanities; 2) comparative race and ethnicity; 3) film and media studies. We are open to scholars with the relevant linguistic training who specialize in Buddhist Studies in any historical period or geographical complex in what is broadly conceived as East Asia. Candidates must have successful college-level teaching experience and an ambitious research program. They must have a Ph.D. in hand by the start of the appointment.

Located in Portland, Oregon, Reed is a liberal arts college with approximately 1300 students that offers a demanding academic program to bright and dedicated undergraduates. Reed College is on the semester system with a teaching load of five courses per year, plus senior thesis advising. Reed also supports a robust Humanities curriculum. Details about the Religion Department at Reed can be found at https://www.reed.edu/religion/.

Application Instructions

Interested candidates should submit the following documents through Interfolio: cover letter, teaching statement, research statement, CV, names of three confidential recommenders (full recommendation letters will be solicited at a later stage), and at least one sample syllabus of your own design. The cover letter should address how the applicant’s teaching and scholarship are suited to the liberal arts college environment, and share experiences with academic mentoring. Reed College is a highly selective liberal arts institution with a distinguished record of educational accomplishment and a strong commitment to scholarship. We are a community that values cultural and intellectual diversity and believes that inclusive educational practices are essential to the excellence of our academic program. In your application material, we invite you to describe how your teaching, scholarship, mentorship, and/or community service reflect these values. Reed is committed to non-discrimination and equal opportunity employment.

Application review will begin November 1, 2026; we plan to conduct initial interviews by Zoom in early November. Search inquiries may be addressed to religion.search@reed.edu.
