Job Description:

Duties and Responsibilities

The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this position. Management may assign additional functions/duties related to the type of work of the position as necessary.

  • Ability to efficiently apply all paint types for interior / exterior surfaces.
  • Ability to care for and repair wood surfaces inside and outside buildings (working with varnishes, sealers, sealants, appropriate chemicals, etc.). To include courtroom surfaces and pews.
  • Ability to care for and repair metal surfaces inside and outside buildings such as windows, railings, metal surfaces (grinding, sanding, preparing surfaces for rust inhibitors, primers, paints, etc.).
  • Ability to care for and repair surfaces such as sheetrock and stucco. To include tape and float, patchwork, mortars and prep compounds, texturing and trowel work.
  • Operating experience with man lifts, boom lifts, scissor lifts, pressure washer, airless paint strayers: to include line striping equipment and engine usage and care, etc. Maintenance of such equipment will be the responsibility of this position.
  • Ability to conduct oneself and speak to all people in a professional manner.
  • Coordinate projects and plan accordingly with staff and personnel. Accommodate staff and personnel work schedules.
  • Gathers estimates and procures appropriate materials and tools required to perform work related functions listed above.
  • Prepares and processes daily work reports, inspection reports, work orders, requisitions, sketches, etc. Maintains appropriate work records and documents, including work orders and formal and informal inspections in county provided work order system.
  • Reviews work, coordinates work and establishes work schedules based on level of priority; maintains standards; monitors status of work in progress; inspects completed work assignments; answers questions; gives advice and direction as needed.
  • Inspects facilities to identify maintenance and repair requirements and priorities.
  • Required to participate in and provide technical direction and on the job, classroom, and/or other means of training to further knowledge of maintenance related skills.
  • Employees in this position are expected to allow for flexibility in day-to-day assignments or duties, in addition to being able to prioritize assignments based on several factors.
  • Work performed outside of regular business/office hours may be required after approval from department superintendent and or director.
  • Performs related work as required.
  • Adequate attendance is required.
  • Must work well with others, seeks to help others both in the department and county.
  • Comply with all state, federal, local, county and department policies, practices and regulations.
  • Required to work in a detention facility performing facility maintenance.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Requires High School graduation or GED equivalent.

Two (2) years of experience in performing building maintenance in relation to painting, carpentry, drywall, mud and spackling, stucco application and care, and minor construction and repairs. Experience with the operation and care of various commercial machines or equipment; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

Must have prior experience operating a variety of equipment such as lifts, excavators, generators, pressure washers, paint sprayers, pulling trailers, etc.

Must have excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal skills.

Must be proficient in reading schematics and work plans.

Must be able and willing to work after hours to include weekends and holidays with little to no notice.

Physical Demands:

  • Performs light to medium work that involves walking or standing virtually all the time and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or considerable skill, adeptness and speed in the use of the fingers, hands or limbs in tasks involving close tolerances or limits of accuracy.
  • Working in confined spaces.
  • Climbing ladders and scaffolding.

Unavoidable Hazards (Work Environment):

  • Working in occupied public areas and uncommon areas; to include basements, attics, rooftops, etc.
  • Involves routine and frequent exposure to:
  • Chemical usage, fumes and/or noxious odors.
