The ACLU seeks applicants for the full-time position of Senior Advisor, Affiliate Organizational Management and Leadership on the Organizational Management Equity and Inclusion team in the Affiliate Support and Nationwide Initiatives Department of the ACLU’s National office in New York, NY or Washington, DC.

The Affiliate Support and Nationwide Initiatives Department (ASNI) builds state capacity and strengthens and maintains the connections between the ACLU and its network of 54 state affiliates and the 1,500 staff who work out of the state offices. Their work constitutes an unparalleled bulwark in the defending and advancing of civil liberties and civil rights. The Department staff lead efforts to share knowledge, talent, and skill across the organization, building the next generation of civil rights leaders and positioning the organization for future challenges.

This position is part of a collective bargaining unit. It is represented by ACLU Staff United (ASU).

WHAT YOU'LL DO 

Reporting to the Senior Director, Affiliate Leadership, Organizational Management Equity and Inclusion, the Senior Advisor, Affiliate Organizational Management and Leadership builds and supports programs, and other initiatives that create organizational strength and resilience across our Nationwide network of affiliates. Organizational Management Equity and Inclusion team (OMEI) provides programming, resources, and technical assistance to affiliates in the areas of change management, organizational development, leadership development, human resources, board governance, organizational financial health, equity, diversity, inclusion and belonging (EDIB), restorative inclusion practices, and strategic planning. 

As a member of the OMEI team, the Senior Advisor will serve a collaborative, multi-disciplinary team and work directly with the ASNI Director, Executive Directors and other affiliate leaders. Through collaboration, the Senior Advisor will conceptualize, design and support programs for the smallest to the largest affiliates helping to build capacity around leadership, strategic planning, people management, change management, team development and sustainable cultural growth. The Senior Advisor should be driven, innovative, collaborative and committed to meeting the needs of an evolving Affiliate workplace having to adapt to external and internal environmental changes.

YOUR DAY TO DAY

 

  • Contribute to the creation and implementation of leadership programs for ACLU affiliate staff.
  • With ASNI leadership, evolve and innovate programming that is capable of meeting discrete needs for new and tenured affiliate Executive Directors.
  • Act as a project manager and program designer for Executive Director Fellowship; Power Up, a leadership exchange program between affiliates; and other special projects.
  • Act as a high-touch liaison with Executive Directors and manage the ED Professional Development Learning Committee to prioritize the ED experience and ensure EDs have early input into ED focused development programming.
  • Ensure that key information that is necessary to understanding the nationwide enterprise is integrated into Executive Director programming.
  • Track Executive Director transitions and, with the department Director, support and operationalize onboarding efforts including connection to affiliate leadership programs.
  • Develop learning resources and programming that build strategic planning awareness and capabilities.
  • Inform ASNI strategy, help scale and innovate organizational development programming and multi-state initiatives.
  • Ensure that new programs align with our organizational resilience and leadership competency model, so all programs are internally consistent and share a common language and understanding of key leadership skills.
  • Ensure that the program delivery can meet the unique requirements of affiliate leaders’ schedules.
  • Support and develop content with ASNI leadership, including the ASNI Director and Deputy Director, consulting and informing ASNI leadership at various stages of programs from conception to execution of programs.
  • Work with the Senior Advisor of Affiliate Leadership Development to advance Affiliate Leadership Development Academy (ALDA) including contributing and vetting learning content and providing project management support.
  • In coordination with other program stakeholders, develop, track and analyze, metrics providing regular assessments of program effectiveness to the department’s leadership, the affiliate Executive Director Council and full cohort of affiliate Executive Directors.
