Medical Assistant (MA)

Job Overview
Medical Assistants are cross-trained to perform administrative and clinical duties. From
greeting patients and performing a variety of patient centered tasks, to guiding the patient
through the medical appointment, medical assistants are crucial and valued members of the
health care team. While hired to work with a specific medical provider, the MA may be
asked to work with an alternate medical provider, within the practice, in any one of our
facilities, as deemed necessary by Administration.

Responsibilities and Duties
Administrative Duties (may include, but not limited too):
• Using computer applications
• Answering telephones
• Greeting Patients
• Updating and filing patient electronic medical records (EMR)
• Coding and filling out insurance forms
• Assisting with and scheduling appointments
• Arranging for hospital admissions, surgical admissions, imaging services and laboratory
services
• Handling various correspondence
Clinical Duties (may include, but not limited too):
• Performing initial patient intake to include taking vitals, reasons for appointment,
symptoms and initial medical history (all to be entered in the EMR)
• Obtaining the patient’s current list of medications (to be entered in the EMR)
• Preparing patients for examination (aka; “rooming patients”)
• Explaining treatment procedures to patients
• Assisting the physician (MD) or physician assistant (PA) during exams and minor
surgical procedures
• Collecting and preparing laboratory specimens
• Preparing surgery forms and transmitting completed forms to surgery
center/hospital
• Performing basic laboratory tests
• Instructing patients about medication and special diets
