The Mechanical Design Engineer is responsible for owning the development of aspects of the battery pack and energy storage system installation related to safely managing high-temperature failures. The ideal candidate will have experience in the design of lightweight, high-temperature metallic and composite structures and have enthusiasm for the iterative loop of design, analysis, and hands-on testing that comes with innovation in a new industry. In this role you’ll work in a small team environment focused on bringing your designs through verification testing and into volume production. You’ll utilize past industry experience combined with outside-the-box thinking to solve problems unique to the electric aviation industry. Your toolkit will include CAD software (CATIA), a variety of analysis tools, in-house fabrication capabilities, and a state-of-the-art test facility. How you will contribute to revolutionizing electric aviation:

• Design products using CAD, owning and managing all parts in detailed assemblies
• Develop and build prototypes and run experiments to inform future designs
• Design of experiments for individual components up to full system level assemblies to inform strategies of maintaining continued safe flight during high temperature, high-pressure failures 
• System-level evaluation of the aircraft installation level impact of a battery failure event and ownership of associated designs to mitigate the effects
• Create drawings and manage BOMs
• Follow Review and Change processes, and assist in process improvements
• Work with internal and external fabricators to see parts through manufacturing
• Development of scalable manufacturing processes in parallel with product design
• Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with both internal & external customers
• High energy, self-motived, organized and detail-oriented

Minimum Qualifications We are seeking:

• Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering or other Engineering degree with a strong Mechanical Design focus from an accredited University.
• Minimum 5 years experience in hands-on mechanical design, with experience in high-temperature applications and thermal analysis
• Mastery of 3D CAD software (CATIA preferred) with experience in FEA (ANSYS preferred) with the ability to conduct preliminary sizing using hand calculations or FEM
• Experience designing products for certification – FAA certification experience preferred
• Self-starter that is well organized, disciplined, and a team player
• Good team, communication, and leadership skills required
