Job Description Summary

The Sr. Manager, Benefits role will oversee the planning, execution, compliance, communication and administration of the Company’s health and welfare benefits-related programs and activities.  This role will present the opportunity to contribute analytically, while directing and planning the day-to-day operations of the benefit programs (such as medical, dental, vision, short-term and long-term disability, life insurance, etc.). This position provides excellent customer service and administers quality benefit plans.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Oversees the day-to-day operations of the company's health and wellness benefits
  • Hires, trains, coaches and mentors the employee benefits department including oversight of daily responsibilities, programs and systems
  • Handles escalations and provides guidance to employees and management regarding benefit questions or exceptions
  • Participates in the regular plan design review and strategy development meetings
  • Maintains benefit plans and assist in benefit plan compliance
  • Reviews and analyzes changes to state and federal laws pertaining to benefits and reports necessary or suggested changes to management
  • Serves as primary contact for plan vendors and third-party administrators
  • Coordinates transfer of data to external contacts for services, premiums and plan administration
  • Documents and maintains administrative procedures for assigned benefits processes
  • Ensures timeliness and accuracy of required reporting and fees
  • Audits the accuracy and performance of functions performed by benefits staff
  • Assists Director with analyzing current benefits, evaluating the use, services, coverage, effectiveness, cost, plan experience and competitive trends in benefits programs, and identifies the company's stance
  • Performs plan audits; prepares, collects and organizes data for actuarial assessments; reviews data in conjunction with actuarial evaluation task forces
  • Leads the drafting of communication materials to enhance understanding of the company’s benefits and on-going employee education
  • Performs ad hoc reporting utilizing retirement recordkeeping platform and company HRIS system
  • Manages open enrollment activities to include the preparation of open enrollment materials and announcements, coordination of system configuration, system testing, and conducting benefit meetings
  • Leads a team of direct reports responsible for day-to-day administration

Requirements:

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Human Resources or a related field or equivalent work
  • 8 plus years of direct Benefits Administration experience, including 3 plus years of direct management experience leading and developing teams both with direct and indirect reports and cross functional or matrixed environments
  • Union experience, strongly preferred
  • Proven capability in core benefits program vendor management
  • Subject matter expert in benefits compliance requirements
  • Ability to work independently and effectively prioritize work while balancing multiple priorities and deadlines
  • Strong follow-through skills and ability to resolve issues in a fast-paced environment
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, organizational and planning skills, including demonstrated ability to problem solve, communicate effectively, and handle multiple tasks simultaneously
  • High level of excel skills including VLOOKUP, if statements, and pivot tables for data analysis
  • Experience with Workday preferred
  • Maintain highly confidential employee information and files
