Avon Hospital's 3rd Floor Complex Medical Care unit provides care for cardiac, respiratory, wound care, renal, endocrine, gastrointestinal and post-operative patients. As a PCNA on the Med/Surg unit, your primary duties will include providing or assisting with basic patient care under the supervision of an RN, reporting abnormal findings and changes in patients’ condition and keeping patients’ rooms clean and orderly. All the while, your fellow caregivers will assist you, offering a cohesive, encouraging and constructive front to enhance the patient's experience and your skills as a nurse. 

This position supports professional growth through a clinical ladder, shared governance, and committee involvement. Caregivers are encouraged to pursue certifications, attend conferences and serve as champions for falls, stroke and hand hygiene. Opportunities include enterprise mentorship programs, tuition reimbursement for RN degrees and support for STNA license maintenance.

A caregiver in this role works nights from 7:00 p.m. – 7:30 a.m.

A caregiver who excels in this role will:  

• Provide or assist with patient care under the supervision of an RN. Patient care may include vital signs, weight, assisting patients with personal care and activities of daily living, patient transfers/transport, pulse oximetry, point of care testing, dressing changes, applying external monitoring devices and inserting/removing urinary Foley catheters.  

• Report abnormal findings or changes in physical, mental and emotional conditions to an RN.  

• Assist with keeping patients’ rooms clean and orderly.  

• Attend PCNA orientation at West Park for two weeks.

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:  

• High School Diploma or GED 

• Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) upon or within new hire period 

• Demonstrates proficiency in applied mathematics and reading comprehension at minimum junior high level as scored on the employment assessment

• Military experience as a Hospital Corpsman (HM), Combat Medic (68W) or Medical Service Technician (4N0X1) considered 

Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include: 

• State Tested Nursing Assistant (STNA) Certification

Physical Requirements:

• Requires full body motion to move and lift patients, manual finger dexterity with good eye-hand coordination; involves extensive standing and walking.

• Medium Work - Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

• Physical Demand requirements are in excess of those for Light Work.
