About the Team:
We are a small, highly technical team where engineers wear multiple hats. This role combines Engineering, Operations, and Architecture, with a primary focus on engineering and deploying new services on the Comcast Transport Backbone. As a Senior Engineer, you'll own the full lifecycle of backbone services from design and deployment to operational stability.
About the Role:
The Optical Transport Network Engineer is a critical technical role responsible for the reliability, engineering, and evolution of Comcast's national optical backbone. This position blends deep optical transport engineering expertise with operational excellence and architectural ownership. You will play a direct role in designing, engineering, and deploying new backbone services while ensuring network reliability, scalability, and performance.
This position is highly technical, focusing on post-sales support for Solution Engineering services including design, solution acceptance, and network reconfiguration or migration. It involves managing and maintaining the extensive Ciena 6500/RLS Backbone Transport network spanning over 80,000 kilometers of fiber optic infrastructure. The role requires deep expertise in large-scale optical networks and service deployment.
Key Responsibilities:
New Service Engineering & Deployment (Primary Focus)
- Design and engineer new backbone transport services
- Lead deployment and turn-up of new optical services and capacity augmentations
- Validate designs through lab testing and pre-production validation
- Coordinate with architecture, routing, and field teams
- Ensure new deployments align with security, operational, and performance standards
Network Reliability & Operations
- Proactive monitoring, troubleshooting, and network health management
- Firmware and software lifecycle management
- End-to-end circuit validation
- In-service maintenance coordination
Engineering & Architecture
- Capacity planning and growth modeling
- Design documentation (HIF, NBT, EDP, BOM)
- Lab validation of new platforms and software
Vendor & Third-Party Coordination
- Lit circuit design, quoting, and ordering
- Fiber cross-connect ordering
Skills & Experience We’re Looking For:
- 5-7 years of experience in Field Service Engineering or Optical Transport Engineering supporting DWDM deployments
- Ciena 6500 (Photonic, OTN, Ethernet)
- RLS platforms
- Nokia PSS1830 / NFMT
- TCP/IP networking fundamentals
Additional “Nice to Have” Skills:
- Experience supporting large-scale backbone networks
- Python scripting and automation
- API integration and development experience
