About the role

Overview

USU Eastern Upward Bound is a federally funded grant program designed to encourage post-secondary preparation of high school students who are from low-income families and are first-generation college bound students. We serve 60 high school students from Grand, Emery and Carbon counties. During a six-week summer program, up to 30 Upward Bound students experience intensive academic, cultural and social expansion while living in the residence halls at USU Eastern.

 

The residential team leader will help supervise 4-6 high school students throughout the week and overnight in the residence halls. They will act as mentors and supervisors to the participants of the Upward Bound Summer Program. The summer program will begin approximately June 2 - July 14. Team Leaders will be asked to come for two days of some training before the start of the program – dates to be determined once all parties are hired.

 

The successful candidate will also have the opportunity and responsibility to accompany the Upward Bound students on various adventures, and will be required to attend our end of the year trip. This year we will be going to Southern California. All expenses for these trips are included in your compensation (in addition to your base pay) and will not cost you anything. All food and housing is also included for the duration of the six-week summer program.

We are seeking 3 female team leaders. Job offer contingent upon successfully passed background check.

Responsibilities

• Live in the USU Eastern Residence Halls with high school students participating in the Upward Bound program and be "on-duty" 24 hours per day, for the duration of the six-week program with alternating afternoon, morning and some weekend shifts and plenty of time to attend to personal matters.• Supervise, individual and group tutoring, mentoring and peer advising.• Assist instructors with academic programs.• Supervise study halls.• Plan and supervise community service activities.• Plan and supervise social, cultural and recreational activities.• May be required to drive students to program sites. • Accompany participants and supervise during final out-of-state trip.• Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

• Must have completed a minimum of one year of college (24 earned credits) and be in good academic standing (at least a 2.9 cumulative GPA) at the institution last attended• Must be a responsible individual with good interpersonal skills who enjoys working with adolescents from diverse economic, social, and cultural backgrounds• Must be available to attend required training prior to the beginning of the program• Driver's license and good driving record to fulfill job responsibilities• Ability to manage multiple tasks• Taking college coursework during the summer program is strongly discouraged and requires prior approval of the Program Director.

 

Preferred Qualifications

• Prior experience in tutoring and/or peer counseling• Knowledge of the barriers to higher education for low-income and/or potential first-generation college students• Previous USU Upward Bound or TRIO Participation• Ability to speak Spanish

Indoor/Outdoor Duties:

The environment and physical requirements may change depending on the specific function of the work each department performs. Incumbents may be in both indoor and outdoor environments. Indoors, in an office space, event space, or public space are protected from weather conditions, but not necessarily from temperature changes. Incumbents may nearly continuously sit and often use repetitive hand motion (such as typing).

Outdoors, incumbents may not be protected from weather conditions and may be exposed to extreme heat and extreme cold. Additionally, indoor or outdoor work environments may include being confined or in narrow spaces for periods of time. The incumbent may also be exposed to loud noises or vibrations from equipment, and conditions that may affect the respiratory system, such as fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, and poor ventilation. Bending, crawling, and crouching may be required. Incumbents may be required to lift, push, and/or pull objects up to 50 pounds and be required to walk and/or stand for long periods of time.
