About the role

Description

GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES

This employee performs a variety of semi-skilled and skilled tasks related to the repair and maintenance of city right of way and repairs of asphalt and concrete owned or maintained by the City. He or she will supervise a crew of team members dedicated to such work, assigning projects and tracking their completion. This is a skilled, full-time, non-exempt position under the direct supervision of the Streets Superintendent.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB

  • Prioritize projects, assign work tasks to crew members, procure required materials, file work orders and maintain written or electronic records of projects.
  • Instruct employees in proper work methods and standards; monitor crew work quality; ensure adherence to time schedules and safe work practices, provide performance feedback and input into performance reviews.
  • Remove ice and snow from public roadways, sidewalks, and City parking lots, and other City rights-of-way. 
  • Mows grass and trim shrubs, trees, etc.   
  • Repair roadways, sidewalks and curbs.
  • Answers emergency calls from the public and other agencies taking appropriate action such as placing barricades, removing fallen trees and limbs, emergency patching of streets, etc. 
  • Participates in stand-by and on-call work as required.
  • Other duties as assigned.




Requirements

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods under sometimes unfavorable conditions.
  • Ability to read and write for successful job performance.
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written directions.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with other employees and the public.
  • Knowledge of the laws and regulations related to supervision. 
  • Advanced skill in the operation of equipment, tools, and instruments used for assigned work areas.
  • Intermediate skill in the operation of computers and related equipment. 
  • Ability to assign and supervise the work of others, provide instruction, lead a small crew and inspire confidence. 
  • Ability to read and interpret documents and construction drawings. 


EQUIPMENT/JOB LOCATION/PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The employee will operate light duty vehicles, and other equipment. Constant exposure to all weather conditions (sometimes severe), walking on uneven surfaces, bending, kneeling, squatting, twisting, exposure to airborne dust, toxic fumes and loud noises; driving, working on slippery surfaces, working with toxic substances; occasional lifting of items weighing up to 75 pounds, lifting above shoulders; ability to work in confined and cramped spaces; repetitive hand motion; hear verbal instructions; climb in/out of ditches; dig ditches; small motor skills, and exposure to road hazards. 


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.  
  • CDL Drivers’ License required.  
  • 2 years of supervisory experience.  
  • Flagging certification within 1 year required.
